Birubala Rabha, a prominent social activist based in Assam, known for her relentless campaign against witch hunting, passed away in Guwahati on Monday after a battle with cancer. Born in 1949, Rabha faced significant hardships in her early life, having to drop out of school due to financial constraints and getting married at a young age. She became a mother of three children.
Rabha's crusade against witch hunting gained momentum when tragedy struck her own family, with the loss of her son to this archaic practice. Following this devastating event, the local community ostracized her family for three years. However, instead of succumbing to despair, Rabha chose to fight back. She emerged as a formidable voice against the superstitions and violence associated with witch hunting in Assam.

Her efforts led to the rescue of over 50 individuals who were targeted as witches across the state. Rabha's initiatives, such as '1000 Women' and 'Mission Rabha,' garnered widespread recognition nationwide. These projects aimed at empowering women and marginalized communities, providing them with support and resources to combat social injustices.
In 2021, Rabha received the Padma Shri award, one of India's highest civilian honors, in recognition of her exceptional contributions to society. Additionally, she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005, underscoring the global significance of her advocacy work.
Despite her recent diagnosis of cancer, Rabha continued her activism, demonstrating unwavering determination and resilience. She underwent treatment at the State Cancer Institute in Guwahati until her passing on Monday morning.
The passing of Birubala Rabha is mourned not only in Assam but across the nation. Her legacy extends beyond her personal struggles, symbolizing courage, and resilience in the face of adversity. Rabha's pivotal role in the enactment of the Prevention of and Protection from Witch Hunting Act in 2015 stands as a testament to her commitment to social justice.
Leaders from various political spectrums, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and Assam Congress President Bhupen Kumar Borah, expressed condolences on her demise. Sarma, in a tribute on social media, hailed Rabha's leadership and unwavering dedication to serving society, stating that Assam would forever remain grateful for her contributions.
Birubala Rabha's passing marks the end of an era in the fight against witch hunting in Assam, but her legacy of courage and activism will continue to inspire generations to come.
