Dubai, UAE – On Saturday, July 13, the Mehromah Art House in Jumeirah burst into a wave of creativity and purpose as Art4you Gallery, led by curator Jesno Jackson, presented “Brushes for the Blue - Live Art for Life Below Water.” This impactful event turned art into a powerful voice for the ocean, uniting artists, environmental advocates, students, and the public to raise awareness about marine conservation and the escalating threat of plastic pollution.
At the heart of this meaningful event were wooden boat-shaped panels, thoughtfully crafted to resemble traditional fishing vessels and serve as powerful symbols for artistic storytelling. Conceptualized by Jesno Jackson, these structures represented the cultural and emotional bond between humanity and the sea. Artists transformed the boats into vivid narratives, painting scenes that celebrated the ocean’s wonders, colorful coral reefs, playful dolphins, elegant sea turtles, and thriving marine life.
"These boats go beyond being mere painted structures, they represent our collective commitment to safeguarding the oceans," shared curator Jesno Jackson. "They echo the urgent call to protect marine ecosystems and preserve the lifeblood of our planet." The event aligned with the global Plastic Free July campaign and received support from the Plastic Free July Foundation and the UN SDG Action Campaign, specifically addressing SDG 14: Life Below Water. Art4you Gallery’s CEO, Rengi Cherian, emphasized, "This initiative demonstrates the powerful influence of art in fostering awareness and inspiring meaningful change. We remain dedicated to our role as visual ambassadors for marine conservation."
The event was graced by the presence of esteemed guests including Ahmed Al Heifeiti, Claudia Pinto, Dr. Heike Lieb-Wilson and Bouchra Izaabel. Visitors engaged with the artists to explore the deeper stories behind each piece, and educational stations shared ocean facts and sustainable living tips to amplify the message of sustainability.
Voices from the Canvas: Artist Roya Vahidi created a serene depiction of dolphins gliding through lush coral reefs, an image that, beneath its calm beauty, carried a deeper message urging action against the escalating issue of plastic pollution in our oceans. Thomas Antony offered a compelling visual story of hope and renewal, portraying the younger generation stepping up to clean polluted waters and give new purpose to discarded waste, reinforcing the ideals of sustainability and shared responsibility. Jaimee Felysee, in her piece titled “Silent Beauty,” captured the delicate allure of jellyfish, using them as symbols of the often-overlooked elegance and importance of marine creatures. Natallia Venerova used her artwork as a beacon of transformation, celebrating beauty as a force for advocacy. She proudly contributed her piece championing marine conservation.
With his artwork “Voice for the Voiceless,” Nithin Umesh brought attention to the often-ignored plight of marine life. His piece served as a call to action, urging people to become guardians of these vulnerable ocean species. In a similarly thoughtful tone, Fatimeh Habibollah showcased a meditative composition that celebrated the sea’s gentle elegance and emphasized its delicate ecological balance. Jeevan Oroolu Veettil delivered a powerful message through his artwork “In Life, But Not Living...Free Plastic,” depicting a fish confined inside a plastic bag. The image starkly portrayed the suffocation inflicted by human carelessness and highlighted the harsh truth that every piece of litter carries lasting consequences.
Bridging the gap between art and science, Parisa Keramati drew inspiration from her research on bacteria that neutralize mercury in water. Meanwhile, Reem Al Subiae imagined a mystical underwater scene featuring a mermaid holding the Earth, symbolizing a deep sense of gratitude toward our planet.
Curator Jesno Jackson contributed a vivid painting of underwater life, highlighting the looming threat of plastic pollution. Her artwork resonated with the mission of the Plastic Free July initiative and reflected the goals of SDG 14. Avigyan Bhattacharya crafted a richly textured depiction of coral reefs using a palette knife and natural pigments, celebrating their strength while urging unified efforts to protect these essential ecosystems. Dahana Salem imagined a pristine marine haven, underscoring the fundamental role of water as Earth’s lifeblood and a symbol of unspoiled beauty. Mana Razeghi introduced an ethereal underwater scene featuring a mermaid, a jellyfish, and a shark, representing the delicate coexistence between mythical wonder and marine reality.
With a joyful portrayal of dolphin swimming through blue waters, Naseem Abdo Othman emphasized themes of peace, playfulness, and the urgent need to safeguard our oceans. Reflecting on the emotional weight of the event, Kumar Chadayamangalam remarked, “It felt like I was painting for the ocean itself,” capturing the profound connection felt by artists during the experience. Finally, Noreen Nawab merged elements of self-portraiture with vibrant depictions of sea creatures, portraying humanity’s intrinsic link with the ocean.
“Brushes for the Blue” was a visual manifesto, and a heartfelt call to protect our oceans. By transforming handcrafted wooden boats into symbolic vessels of advocacy, Art4you Gallery reaffirmed the power of art to raise awareness, inspire emotion, and spark meaningful change. In a world where every second breath we take is gifted by the sea, initiatives like this serve as vital reminders: ocean conservation is not optional, it’s essential. As we continue to create, let our art become the voice of the ocean. Let every brushstroke carry a purpose.
