Anna Hall, 24, has rediscovered her love for track and field after years of injuries, heartbreak, and tough losses. On Saturday night, she celebrated a remarkable victory at the world championship, winning the heptathlon and joining the legendary Jackie Joyner-Kersee as only the second American to achieve this title. The heptathlon is a two-day event that tests an athlete’s endurance, skill, and mental strength across seven different track and field disciplines.
With a big smile, Hall danced across the track while carrying the American flag. Jackie Joyner-Kersee, who has been the only American to win the heptathlon at the Olympics or world championships before, was there to watch Hall finish her final race. “This is a pinch-me moment,” Hall said. “Any athlete dreams of getting advice from the GOAT of their sport.”
Hall’s journey to gold began years ago. In 2023, she narrowly lost the world championship to Britain’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson by just 20 points, a difference that could have been made up with a slightly faster race or a better throw. That loss hit her hard, and it took time for her to recover mentally.
Her career has also been marked by injuries. A knee injury slowed her at the Paris Olympics, where she finished fifth. At the 2021 Olympic trials, she collided with a hurdle, requiring surgery on her left foot and ankle. Despite these challenges, she kept pushing forward and finally reached the top.
When she lifted her gold medal, Hall said it represented more than just winning. “Two surgeries, tough losses, heartbreak, losing my love for the sport a little bit — this medal represents all of that. So many people encouraged me and helped me along the way. This is for them too,” she said.

Joyner-Kersee praised Hall’s performance and suggested that Hall could one day break her world record. Hall’s winning score was 6,888 points, 403 points shy of Joyner-Kersee’s record, but she still has enormous potential. “It’s just a matter of time before it all comes together,” Joyner-Kersee said.
For Hall, the victory brought relief and happiness. Unlike her narrow loss two years ago, she had a comfortable lead going into the final 800-meter race and ended up winning by 174 points. “I just tried to stay relaxed and focus on my job. The last 200 meters, I took a moment to enjoy the crowd. It felt amazing,” she said.
Other highlights at the world championship included the U.S. men’s 4x400 relay team winning a second-chance qualifying race after a collision in their first heat, Sha’Carri Richardson making a strong comeback in the 4x100 relay with a world-leading time of 41.60 seconds, and Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet repeating her Olympic feat by winning both the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter races. In the men’s 800 meters, Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi repeated his gold-winning performance from Paris, with Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati and Canada’s Marco Arop taking silver and bronze. Jamaica made a rare mistake in the men’s 4x100 relay, costing them a potential victory despite strong individual sprinters.
Anna Hall’s story is one of courage, determination, and resilience. From surgeries and heartbreak to returning stronger than ever, she has shown that hard work and perseverance can lead to success. “Less than a year ago, I almost burned out,” Hall said. “Now, I’m on top of the sport. This is just the beginning, and I can’t wait to see what comes next.”
