The American Music Awards (AMAs) are making a comeback after taking a break in 2022. This time, the show will air in a new time slot—on Memorial Day—and will be broadcast from a new city, Las Vegas. Another big change is that the AMAs will now be shown on CBS instead of ABC.
Dick Clark Productions and CBS had hinted last year that the awards would return around Memorial Day weekend in 2024. Now, it’s official—the AMAs will be broadcast live on May 26, across all time zones, starting at 8 p.m. ET and 5 p.m. PT. Fans will also be able to stream the show on Paramount+.

However, the exact venue in Las Vegas hasn’t been announced yet. There is also no word on who will host the event or which artists will perform. The AMAs will have a special segment during the show to honor and recognize the contributions of U.S. troops, making Memorial Day an important part of the event’s theme.
For streaming, subscribers of Paramount+ with Showtime will be able to watch the live broadcast as it airs. Those with the Paramount+ Essential plan won’t have access to the live stream but can watch the show on demand the following day.
Although the AMAs haven’t aired a regular edition in the past two and a half years, CBS did broadcast a special event in October 2024, called the American Music Awards 50th Anniversary Special. This show performed well in ratings, showing a major improvement compared to the AMAs' last edition on ABC in 2022. CBS and Dick Clark Productions even stated that the increase in viewership was “the largest year-over-year growth of any music special or awards show worldwide.”
The last regular AMAs show aired on November 20, 2022, on ABC from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. That edition, hosted by Wayne Brady, was held in the fall, which had been the event’s usual timing for years. However, the ratings that year hit an all-time low, with only 3.53 million viewers and a 0.6 rating among adults aged 18-49.
By the spring of 2023, it was clear that the AMAs were going on pause. There was uncertainty over whether ABC would continue to broadcast the show or if another network would take over. In the meantime, Dick Clark Productions moved the Billboard Music Awards into the AMAs’ traditional fall spot.
The AMAs have been around since 1974 when legendary TV producer Dick Clark created them for ABC. At the time, ABC had lost the rights to air the Grammys to CBS, so the network introduced the AMAs as its own music awards show. For a period during the 1980s, the AMAs even had higher viewership than the Grammys. The show originally took place in January or February before moving to a November timeslot in 2003, where it remained until 2022.
Now, with a new home on CBS, a new date on Memorial Day, and a fresh location in Las Vegas, the AMAs are gearing up for an exciting return. Fans can expect more details about the venue, host, and performers in the coming weeks.
