Apple Brings In Amar Subramanya To Lead Next-Gen AI Push

Apple has appointed Amar Subramanya as its new Vice President of AI, marking a major shift in the company’s artificial intelligence strategy. He replaces long-time executive John Giannandrea, who will stay on as adviser until retiring next spring. The move comes at a time when Apple is racing to catch up with rivals rapidly pushing generative AI into consumer products.

Subramanya’s appointment was announced through Apple’s internal communication and a company blog post, highlighting his “deep expertise” in machine learning research and product integration. Apple CEO Tim Cook underscored that AI has always been central to Apple’s vision and said Amar’s addition strengthens Craig Federighi’s leadership team.

Born and educated in India, Subramanya completed his engineering degree in electrical, electronics, and communications at Bangalore University in 2001 before starting his career at IBM as a software engineer. Four years later, he moved to the University of Washington to pursue a PhD, during which he briefly worked with Microsoft as an intern and visiting researcher.

Following his doctorate, he joined Google’s Mountain View office as a staff research scientist. His rise within Google was steady—eight years later he became a principal engineer and eventually VP of Engineering in 2019. He oversaw engineering for Google’s Gemini Assistant, one of the company’s most public-facing AI products. In July this year, he briefly shifted to Microsoft as Corporate Vice President of AI before being hired by Apple.

At Apple, Subramanya will report directly to Software Chief Craig Federighi. His responsibilities cover core areas of Apple’s AI ecosystem, including foundation models, machine-learning research, search, knowledge systems, and AI infrastructure.

The leadership change comes during a sensitive phase for Apple. Under Giannandrea, the company faced criticism for falling behind Samsung and other competitors who introduced generative AI features earlier and more aggressively. Apple's own “Apple Intelligence” upgrades for Siri were pushed to 2026, raising concerns internally and externally about the company’s pace.

With Subramanya now at the helm, Apple is signaling a renewed focus on delivering advanced AI experiences across its devices—a shift many analysts believe was overdue. The coming months are expected to show how quickly Apple can translate this leadership change into visible progress on the consumer front.
