Algoma Steel Announces 1,000 Job Cuts as Plant Adapts to Electric Furnace

Algoma Steel has revealed plans to lay off approximately 1,000 employees at its plant in Sault Ste. Marie, with the layoffs set to begin on March 23, 2026, as the company phases out its blast furnace and coke production. This reduction represents about one-third of its total workforce.

The company attributes the layoffs to “extraordinary market forces” and significant U.S. tariffs on steel. Algoma is hastening its shift to electric arc furnace technology, moving up its timeline from 2027 to better compete in an increasingly tough global market.

Union representatives have confirmed that many members have received layoff notifications, though final figures are still being confirmed. Efforts are underway to assist impacted workers, including skills retraining programs and trades support.

Despite the federal and provincial governments providing $500 million in loans aimed at job protection, these layoffs reflect the ongoing challenges faced by Canada’s steel sector. Local officials express concern that these job cuts could have enduring effects on the economy of northern Ontario.
