Global airlines are suspending flights to the Middle East in response to escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. Prominent carriers, including KLM, Lufthansa, and Air France, have temporarily ceased routes to crucial locations such as Dubai, Riyadh, and Tel Aviv.
Air France has confirmed the suspension of its flights to Dubai due to concerns over safety amid the tense geopolitical climate. Similarly, Dutch airline KLM has paused services to routes that require passage through Iranian, Iraqi, or Israeli airspace. Lufthansa is now operating only daytime flights while completely avoiding Iranian airspace. North American carriers like United Airlines and Air Canada have also canceled their flights to Tel Aviv.
The cancellations are prompted by growing anxieties over a possible military conflict between the US and Iran. President Donald Trump indicated that a significant naval presence is moving towards Iran for precautionary reasons, despite previous reassurances regarding the unlikelihood of immediate military action. Meanwhile, the White House noted a temporary halt in executions of protesters by Iran following widespread unrest, although US military maneuvers continue in potential preparation for escalation.
Among the naval assets heading to the Gulf are the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and several guided-missile destroyers. Analysts caution that this deployment heightens the risk of regional conflict, leading airlines to reevaluate their flight paths to ensure passenger safety.
Civil aviation authorities have pointed out missile and drone threats in the region. Last week, Iran briefly restricted its airspace for over four hours, affecting flights from all over the globe and illustrating how swiftly tensions can disrupt international air travel.
Travelers intending to visit Israel or Gulf nations should verify flight statuses and alternative routes with their airlines. The aviation sector is actively monitoring the situation to mitigate risks to passenger safety while striving to maintain essential air services.
