Air travel across multiple continents was thrown into turmoil on Friday after Airbus issued an urgent alert warning that intense solar radiation could corrupt critical flight-control data on A320-family aircraft, the world’s most widely used jets.
The immediate precautionary instructions sent to airlines triggered an avalanche of delays and cancellations, with carriers scrambling to assess their fleets and begin software upgrades.
Air France cancelled 35 flights through Friday and began evaluating how many more would be grounded over the weekend. Colombian carrier Avianca said nearly 70 percent of its operational fleet had been hit by the software issue, signalling major disruptions over the next ten days. American Airlines also began servicing roughly 340 affected aircraft, cautioning passengers of “several delays” during the update process.
Airbus said the malfunction risk was identified after a JetBlue-operated A320 suffered a sudden in-flight control problem on October 30. The aircraft, travelling from Cancun to Newark, unexpectedly nosedived due to a computer fault, forcing an emergency landing in Tampa. Local responders reported injuries among passengers.
According to the aircraft maker, around 6,000 A320-family jets currently in service may require the update. While most software replacements are expected to take only a few hours, roughly 1,000 aircraft may need work that could stretch into weeks, potentially impacting global flight schedules through December.
Thales, the manufacturer of the flight-control computer, said the hardware met all required specifications but clarified that the affected functionality depended on software outside its scope. The Airbus advisory did not specify which supplier created the software, leaving several technical details undisclosed.
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency acknowledged being informed and cautioned passengers to expect short-term disruptions, emphasising that flight safety takes priority over operational convenience.
Despite the widespread impact, some carriers reported minimal effects. United Airlines confirmed it had not been affected, without further explanation.
With more than 12,000 A320-family aircraft sold since 1988, the alert has created one of the most significant operational challenges for airlines in recent years. As carriers work to stabilise schedules, passengers worldwide are being advised to stay alert for last-minute updates as the technical fixes roll out.
