The end of the year is usually the time when people start planning vacations, but this year the push to travel feels stronger than ever. Many Indian cities are covered in thick pollution, and the Air Quality Index regularly goes into dangerous triple digits. Breathing fresh air has become a luxury, and because of this, many families and travelers are now planning “aircations” instead of simple holidays. The idea is simple: go somewhere with cleaner skies, double-digit AQI, and a chance to truly relax.
Goa has always been a popular destination at this time of year, but many travelers now feel it has become too expensive and crowded. Flights cost a lot, hotel prices are high, and transportation has become difficult. Instead, destinations like Vietnam are offering better value and more enjoyable experiences. Cities such as Saigon and Hanoi are full of culture, great food, and interesting places to explore. When travelers want a break from the busy streets, they can relax on beaches in Nha Trang, Phu Quoc, Con Dao Island, or Ninh Van Bay, all of which offer beautiful scenery and fresh air.
Thailand has also remained a favorite choice, especially for people who prefer beaches and relaxation. While Bangkok may feel familiar to many, cities like Phuket and Krabi provide direct access to quiet beaches and outdoor activities. Travelers also head to Koh Samui or visit the peaceful mountains of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. These destinations offer delicious food, lovely views, and clean air without the constant need for air purifiers.
Sri Lanka continues to shine for visitors wanting a destination that has everything. The country has clean coastline, untouched hill stations, wide tea plantations, historic temples, and fresh, breathable air wherever one travels. Cities like Galle are peaceful, scenic, and provide a refreshing change from the polluted atmosphere faced in Indian cities, especially in winter.
Those who want something even more peaceful often choose Bhutan. The country has a slower pace of life, clean air, and stunning views. Visitors can explore the capital city Thimphu, admire the beautiful Punakha Dzong, trek to the famous Tiger’s Nest monastery, or drive through high passes like Dochula and Chele La. The experience is calm, scenic, and a reminder of how peaceful nature can be.
Travelers who prefer to stay within India can still find fresh air in several southern and northeastern destinations. Hill towns like Ooty in Tamil Nadu and Wayanad in Kerala often have an AQI below 20, giving visitors a chance to breathe freely. The Northeast also remains one of the cleanest regions in the country, with places such as Sikkim, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh offering hiking, rafting, and beautiful open skies. These experiences feel increasingly rare in northern Indian cities today.
As pollution continues to rise every winter, clean air has become one of the most valued features of a holiday. Travelers are no longer just chasing beaches and mountains; they are searching for a place where they can breathe without worry. The growing trend of “aircations” shows that good air quality now plays a major role in holiday planning.
