A serious incident is under scrutiny by India’s aviation authorities after an Air India Airbus A350’s engine sustained damage from a cargo container while taxiing at Delhi airport.
The flight, originally bound for New York, had to turn back shortly after takeoff due to Iran's temporary airspace closure. After a safe landing, the plane, carrying around 240 passengers, was taxiing towards the parking area when its right engine ingested the container amidst low visibility conditions.
It was reported that the cargo container accidentally fell from a ground support vehicle onto the taxiway. The operator, who was in the process of unloading luggage and cargo, noticed the plane approaching and left, neglecting the fallen container.
Aviation regulators have ensured that the debris was swiftly cleared from the taxiway, while the damaged aircraft has been moved to a designated area for repairs. Images released by the authorities reveal significant damage to both the engine casing and the fan blades.
This incident has sparked concerns about ground safety protocols at airports in India. Previous audits have uncovered various safety issues, including deteriorating runway markings and inadequate aircraft maintenance.
Air India has confirmed that the affected A350 will remain grounded until repairs can be completed, prompting warnings about potential disruptions for long-haul flights, particularly those to New York and London, as the airline operates six A350s on international routes.
