At least 35 people were killed and 230 injured on Monday after heavy rainstorms struck eastern Afghanistan, a local official confirmed. Quraishi Badloon, head of the department of information and culture, reported that the thunderstorms wreaked havoc in Jalalabad and several districts of Nangarhar province.
"On Monday evening, rain caused by thunderstorms killed 35 people and injured 230 others in Jalalabad and certain districts of Nangarhar," Badloon told AFP. The casualties resulted from heavy storms and rains that led to the collapse of trees, walls, and roofs of people's homes. "There is a possibility that casualties might rise," he added, noting that the injured and victims' bodies were brought to Nangarhar Regional Hospital and Fatima-tul-Zahra Hospital.
Images shared by Badloon's department depicted medical personnel in white and blue uniforms treating the wounded. The disaster has prompted an outpouring of grief and support from local and national leaders.

"We share the grief of the families of the victims," said Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Taliban government. "The relevant institutions of the Islamic Emirate have been directed to go to the affected areas as soon as possible," Mujahid wrote on X (formerly Twitter). He added that they would provide shelter, food, and medicine to displaced families.
This tragedy comes on the heels of another devastating event in May when flash floods killed hundreds of people in Afghanistan and submerged vast agricultural lands. The floods were particularly damaging in a country where 80 percent of the population relies on farming for their livelihood.
As Afghanistan continues to grapple with natural disasters, the government's response and aid distribution will be crucial in the coming days.
