In a world where power often speaks louder than kindness, Advocate Sheela Thomas stands as living proof that leadership and compassion can coexist — beautifully, fearlessly, and purposefully.
For over 25 years, Sheela has been a pillar of strength for the expatriate community in the UAE — a lawyer, humanitarian, mentor, and the Founder & CEO of the Najmah Group of Companies, encompassing a law firm, recruitment agency, management consultancy, event production house, and general trading.
Her journey is not one built on privilege, but on persistence — a story of a woman who made it her life’s mission to uplift others, one case and one act of kindness at a time. For Advocate Sheela, law was never just a career — it was a calling.
“I believe in creating opportunities and choices through empowerment and awareness,” she says. “Opportunities do not come your way easily — you have to grab them. My work is about transforming lives and bringing about positive change.”
Her reputation precedes her. In the UAE’s legal landscape, Adv. Sheela is more than a name — she’s a brand synonymous with resilience, integrity, and empathy. Known for her ability to mediate, mentor, and solve complex legal issues with a human touch, she has helped countless individuals navigate the toughest chapters of their lives.
“I don’t leave anyone midway with their problems,” she adds firmly. “Being a good human and trying to put myself in the client’s shoes — that’s the core quality of my profession.”
Her professional achievements are impressive, but it’s her humanitarian work that truly defines her legacy. When the world shut down during COVID-19, Sheela opened her heart — and her doors — to thousands of stranded workers. Working tirelessly with UAE authorities and various consulates, she personally helped repatriate over 15,000 blue-collar workers, many of whom had lost their jobs and had their passports withheld by employers.
Her efforts went far beyond paperwork — she provided food, accommodation, and legal assistance, often funding logistics and travel from her own pocket. “There were moments when I was sitting on 2,200 pro bono files,” she recalls. “We worked round the clock to get their passports released, visas canceled, and documents ready. It wasn’t easy, but it was necessary.”
During Ramadan, she and her Women’s Forum in Sharjah — a group of over 800 women volunteers — distributed food kits daily for an entire month. “If these workers didn’t get help, they had no choice but despair,” she said softly. “That’s why we stepped in. We could not turn away.”
Sheela’s strength comes from her roots. Born and raised in Hyderabad, with family roots in Kerala, she grew up in a disciplined yet nurturing home. “My father, an army officer, taught me courage and discipline. My mother, a caregiver, taught me compassion and faith. My parents are my greatest gurus,” she reflects.
The youngest among six siblings — all highly educated professionals — Sheela learned early that education and empathy are the twin pillars of success. “Nobody motivates anybody; it’s the self who must rise,” she says. “You must be God-fearing, skilled, and grateful for the life you’re building.”
Even today, her mission continues. Every Friday or Saturday morning between 7 AM and 10 AM, she can be found visiting labor camps across the UAE, offering free legal consultation and emotional support. “There is no single weekend without meeting the people who need me,” she says. “These hours among them give my week its meaning.”
Sheela believes her humanitarian efforts are not acts of charity but acts of responsibility — a way to give back to the nation that has given her so much. “This land has blessed me beyond measure,” she says. “It’s only right that I give back — to the UAE and to its people.”
Adv. Sheela is a fierce advocate for women’s empowerment. “Women build homes, and by extension, they build nations,” she emphasizes. She encourages women to embrace individuality and strength unapologetically: “Be who you are and do not change for the people or society.” Her advice is simple yet profound: “Education opens the door, but experience teaches you how to walk through it.”
Beyond courtrooms and humanitarian corridors, Sheela understands the power of visibility and presence. “Fashion and socializing are key factors to network in women’s society,” she says with a smile. “Through these platforms, I reach more people who may need help.”
As a regular at social events, she blends elegance with purpose, using every opportunity to extend her network for the greater good. “My mobile,” she jokes, “is open 24x7 — because you never know when someone might need you.”
When asked what keeps her going after decades of service, Sheela answers with humility: “My mission isn’t over — not as long as there’s someone who needs a helping hand.”
Her inspirations — A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Nelson Mandela, and Indira Gandhi — reflect her belief that leadership means service. Her father remains her ultimate hero, and even her competitors inspire her to do better each day.
For Sheela, success isn’t measured by wealth or awards, but by the lives she’s touched, the justice she’s delivered, and the hope she’s restored. Because for Adv. Sheela Thomas, humanity is not an act — it’s a lifelong profession.
