Artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly advanced across various sectors in recent years, becoming integral to modern technology. Recognizing the need to measure and track the intelligence of its AI systems, OpenAI has developed an internal scale aimed at evaluating progress towards achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI). This initiative comes amid growing interest in AI's potential and capabilities.
According to a report from Bloomberg, OpenAI's scale categorizes AI intelligence into five distinct levels. At present, their ChatGPT model is classified at Level 1 on this scale. Each level is defined based on increasing complexity and capabilities, closely resembling human cognitive abilities. For instance, Level 2 is likened to the problem-solving capacity of a PhD holder, while Level 3 entails autonomous task execution on behalf of users. Level 4 represents AI with creative capabilities, capable of generating novel ideas and innovations. Finally, Level 5, the pinnacle of achievement, describes AGI capable of outperforming humans across a wide range of economically valuable tasks.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has expressed ambitious goals for advancing towards AGI, emphasizing that achieving this milestone remains a top priority for the organization. He recently hinted at the development of GPT-5, the next iteration of their language model, during the Aspen Ideas Festival. Although specifics about GPT-5 are scarce, Altman conveyed optimism about its potential, while acknowledging the extensive work required for its development.

The anticipation surrounding GPT-5 follows the successful rollout of GPT-4o, which showcased advanced capabilities in mathematics and emotional intelligence. OpenAI's recent Spring Update event introduced GPT-4o to the public, highlighting its enhanced functionalities and setting high expectations for its successor.
The development of this internal scale underscores OpenAI's commitment to advancing AI research and development, aiming to push the boundaries of what AI can achieve in solving complex problems and interacting intelligently with humans.
