Aligned with the global efforts of the International Dark Sky Association, the policy encompasses various facets, including the promotion of sustainable lighting systems, protection of natural environments and wildlife, support for astronomical research, enhancement of public health, and promotion of sustainable development.
His Excellency Dr. Salem Al Kaabi, Director General of Operations Affairs at the Department of Municipalities and Transport, expressed the significance of the initiative, stating that the Abu Dhabi Dark Sky Policy reflects their dedication to safeguarding the night sky's beauty. By establishing a comprehensive framework for responsible urban development, the policy aims to raise awareness and promote adherence to sustainable lighting practices. Ultimately, the goal is to foster harmony between urban landscapes and celestial wonders, enhancing residents' quality of life and contributing to the global movement for environmental preservation.
The policy's guidelines apply to both public and private sectors, with exceptions made for cultural festivals and events. Key measures will target outdoor lighting equipment, including public buildings, streets, parks, beaches, commercial establishments, and agricultural and industrial areas. The policy mandates the use of shielded lighting, facade lights, and motion-activated security lighting to minimize light pollution.
To ensure compliance, the Department of Municipalities and Transport will implement a methodology to address light pollution, accompanied by awareness programs to educate individuals on preserving Abu Dhabi's night sky. Those found in violation of the policy will be given a grace period to adjust their lighting practices accordingly.
The launch of the Abu Dhabi Dark Sky Policy underscores the department's unwavering commitment to preserving the night sky as a shared cultural and environmental asset, signaling a significant stride towards sustainability and environmental conservation in the emirate.
