In today’s world, where healthcare and travel often converge, few stories capture the spirit of innovation, compassion, and leadership quite like that of Abdulrahman Alkatheeri. As the CEO of Salka Meditour, he has transformed a deeply personal family struggle into a global mission — one that is not only changing lives, but also reshaping how medical tourism is understood in the Gulf and beyond.

For Abdulrahman, this journey began not in a corporate office or an entrepreneurial pitch room, but within the walls of his own home. Two of his brothers live with disabilities, and for years his family searched tirelessly across borders for treatments for their rare condition. It was a time of confusion, stress, and constant uncertainty. Navigating foreign hospitals, complex documentation, and unfamiliar systems often felt overwhelming. As a young man, Abdulrahman witnessed firsthand how disjointed the process could be for families who were already carrying the heavy burden of worry.

“It was in those difficult moments that the idea of Salka Meditour was born,” he reflects. “I realized that no family should ever feel lost in their search for hope. Healthcare abroad needed to be more accessible, more organized, and above all — more trustworthy.”

This vision grew into Salka Meditour, a company that now connects patients to over 200 leading hospitals across 17 countries. But Abdulrahman’s approach goes far beyond simply linking people to medical institutions. Salka offers a fully integrated service — managing flights, accommodations, logistics, and even wellness programs. The idea is simple but profound: to ensure that every part of the patient’s journey, from the first consultation to recovery, is seamless and compassionate.

“Success is not in the profit margins,” Abdulrahman says. “It is in the relief on a parent’s face, or the gratitude in a patient’s voice when they realize they are not alone. That is the real measure of what we do.”

At the heart of Abdulrahman’s leadership is a clear set of values: responsibility, integrity, and empathy. These values are not abstract principles; they are the foundation of every decision made at Salka Meditour.

As a young Emirati entrepreneur, he is acutely aware of the dual role he plays: building a competitive, innovative company, while also carrying the responsibility of representing the UAE on the global stage. “Promoting the UAE’s strengths to the world is part of my responsibility as a citizen,” he says. “We are not just selling services — we are showcasing the UAE’s reputation for excellence, safety, and hospitality.”

This sense of national duty has shaped many of Salka’s partnerships, including collaborations with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi and the Dubai Health Authority. These alliances ensure that Salka is not only aligned with the UAE’s strategic goals in healthcare and tourism, but also that international patients encounter the highest levels of trust and transparency when choosing the country as their medical destination.

Medical tourism is unlike other industries. At its core is something deeply human: health, hope, and the dignity of care. Families who approach Salka are often at their most vulnerable — searching for solutions to conditions that feel overwhelming. Abdulrahman understands this personally, which is why Salka’s model is centered on building trust.

He recalls a story of a young child whose family had nearly given up hope after years of searching for a specialized surgery. “They came to us exhausted, uncertain, and scared,” Abdulrahman says. Through Salka’s global network, the family was connected to a world-class hospital abroad, and the surgery was a success. “The gratitude in the parents’ eyes, knowing we had helped give their child a chance at life, is something I will never forget. That is why Salka exists.”

Every hospital that joins Salka’s network is carefully vetted for quality, technology, and patient outcomes. But Abdulrahman looks beyond statistics. “It’s not only about medical excellence. We look for institutions that share our values of compassion, transparency, and respect. Patients should feel cared for, not processed.”

One of the most significant challenges in medical tourism is the financial burden. Families often face impossible choices, balancing quality care with affordability. Abdulrahman addressed this challenge through an innovative model that leverages partnerships with Third-Party Administrators (TPAs) outside the UAE.

This system allows patients to access treatment abroad while their medical expenses are covered through insurance providers in the Emirates. In many cases, patients only pay for travel-related costs, not the treatment itself. It is an approach that not only eases financial strain but also makes advanced care available to people who might otherwise be excluded.

“Access to healthcare should never be determined by wealth alone,” Abdulrahman insists. “Our job is to remove barriers, not add to them.”

Every entrepreneur has a story of doubt, and for Abdulrahman, the biggest challenge was at the very beginning. Medical tourism requires immense trust, and convincing patients and partners to believe in a new company was no small feat.

“Many doubted whether we could create a reliable system,” he recalls. “But I knew persistence and transparency were the keys. We didn’t promise — we delivered. One case at a time, we proved ourselves.”

Today, Salka Meditour’s reputation speaks for itself, with a growing network of hospitals and patients who serve as living testimonials to the company’s impact.

What sets Abdulrahman apart is his leadership style — a rare balance between empathy and strategy. “Many leaders focus only on growth,” he says. “For me, business growth and compassion must go hand in hand.”

This approach extends to his team. He believes people work best when they see meaning in what they do. “At Salka, I remind my team that we are not just arranging logistics. We are changing lives. Every file is a story, every booking is a family’s hope.”

By investing in training, encouraging open communication, and celebrating both big and small wins, Abdulrahman has cultivated a culture of purpose and loyalty. “Leadership is not about being in front,” he reflects. “It’s about lifting others up.”

The future of medical tourism is deeply tied to technology, and Abdulrahman is already steering Salka into this next frontier. Telemedicine, AI-driven health assessments, and digital patient records are transforming how people prepare for treatments abroad. These tools allow for faster, clearer communication and ensure continuity of care even after patients return home.

“I see digital health as the next great leap for medical tourism,” he says. “It will make the patient journey safer, more personalized, and more transparent. At Salka, we are adopting these innovations because our mission is not just about today’s needs, but tomorrow’s possibilities.”

In the next five years, he envisions Salka expanding its network to over 400 hospitals worldwide, while also developing specialized programs for rare conditions, rehabilitation, and holistic wellness. His dream project, if resources were unlimited, is to create a global platform that integrates every step of the patient journey: from diagnosis and second opinions to treatment, travel, recovery, and post-care support. “Such a system would make healthcare truly borderless,” he says.

Despite the rapid growth of Salka Meditour, Abdulrahman remains grounded by the story that started it all — his brothers’ search for care. “That personal experience keeps me focused,” he says. “Behind every booking is a human being with fears, struggles, and hopes. That is what keeps me committed.”

He also draws strength from his identity as an Emirati. “The UAE is built on values of innovation, hospitality, and excellence. I carry those values with me every time I represent Salka abroad.” For him, national duty and business ambition are inseparable. Each partnership signed and each patient supported reflects back on his homeland.

To young Emirati entrepreneurs, his advice is straightforward: “Start with purpose. Stay persistent. Don’t fear innovation. The UAE is a land of opportunity, and you have the ability to contribute to its global story.”

Ultimately, Abdulrahman’s goal is not to be remembered as just a successful businessman. His vision for his legacy is much deeper: “I want to be remembered as someone who turned personal struggle into global hope — someone who built a company that gave families clarity, access, and trust when they needed it most.”

In his story, business is never just about contracts or growth. It is about presence, empathy, and the ability to give people back a sense of control when life feels uncertain. Salka Meditour is more than a company; it is a mission, one that embodies Abdulrahman’s belief that healthcare should always serve humanity first.
