When someone falls sick with a cold or cough, people often say, “Eat more fruits, they will make you healthy again.” Fruits are usually good for the body, but during illness, not all fruits work in your favour. Some fruits can increase mucus, bother your throat, or slow down your recovery without you realising it.
When you are sick, your body prefers warm and soothing foods. These help your throat stay calm and support your immune system. But a few fruits are naturally cold or too acidic. Eating them during a cold or cough can make your symptoms worse and delay healing.
Here is a clear and simple guide to seven fruits you should avoid when you have a cold or cough, along with the reasons behind each one.
Citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, sweet lime, and grapefruit are well known for having Vitamin C. They help prevent illness, but they may not feel comfortable when you already have a sore throat or cough.
Their acidity can hurt a sore throat
They may increase coughing
They can create a dry or burning feeling
Eating them cold makes symptoms worse
Vitamin C is helpful, but acidic fruits can make your throat feel even more painful when you are already sick.
Bananas are healthy on most days, but not when your throat is irritated.
Bananas have a natural cooling effect
They increase mucus in the throat
They can make the throat feel blocked
If eaten at night, congestion may increase
It’s better to skip bananas until your cough improves.
Watermelon is refreshing in hot weather, but it is not suitable during cold, cough, or winter.
It cools the body too much
It may trigger sneezing
It can increase watery cough
Your body needs warmth during sickness. Watermelon may bring the opposite effect and delay recovery.
Pineapple is tasty and has digestive benefits, but its acidity can trouble your throat when you are sick.
It can cause a burning sensation
It may lead to coughing fits
Cold pineapple juice irritates the throat
People with sensitive throats should avoid pineapple while recovering.
Grapes are juicy, but they are not recommended when you have a cough.
They increase mucus
They make phlegm thicker
They can irritate the throat
May cause bloating during fever
Wait until your cough settles before eating grapes again.
Fully ripe guava is healthy, but unripe guava can be rough on a sore throat.
It can irritate the throat
May trigger coughing
Hard texture can trouble your throat even more
If you want to eat guava, choose only ripe ones and avoid cold servings.
Pears seem gentle, but they have cooling properties, which can increase chest congestion.
They increase moisture in the body
They can worsen chest congestion
They may make mucus thicker
Pears may slow your healing during winter or sickness.
Even though fruits are full of vitamins, some of them are:
too cold for the body
too acidic
mucus-forming
rough on a sore throat
When your immune system is already busy fighting infection, these fruits can add more pressure on your throat and chest. Avoiding them helps your throat recover faster and keeps mucus under control.
When you are sick, choose fruits that feel warm, soft, and easy to digest.
Papaya – supports immunity and digestion
Steamed apple – warm and gentle on the throat
Warm fruit soup – comforting and healthy
Cooked apples or pears – soothing and non-irritating
These choices help your body heal without causing discomfort.
Drink warm water often
Try herbal teas like ginger or tulsi
Avoid cold or refrigerated foods
Take steam to ease congestion
Get plenty of rest
Eat warm, light meals like soups or khichdi
Small daily habits can make your recovery much faster.
Fruits are healthy, but the right choice matters when you are sick. Avoiding citrus fruits, bananas, pineapple, grapes, unripe guava, pears, and watermelon during a cold or cough can help your throat heal faster and reduce mucus. Choosing warm and soothing foods gives your body the support it needs to recover quickly and comfortably.
