An earthquake of 6.7 magnitude struck off the coast of Davao Oriental province in the southern Philippines early Wednesday, inducing widespread tremors and prompting concerns among local residents.
The quake occurred at 11:02 a.m. local time at a depth of 42 kilometers, categorized as moderately deep. Its epicenter was situated approximately 47 kilometers away from Many's coastline, leading to tremors felt throughout various regions of the island.
Officials have warned that aftershocks and potential structural harm could follow, especially in areas near the epicenter. However, initial evaluations from disaster response teams and local authorities reported no immediate casualties or significant damage.
Recent months have seen an uptick in seismic incidents in the Philippines. On December 22, 2025, a 5.7-magnitude earthquake rattled the waters nearby, occurring at a shallow depth of 10 km, which amplified its surface intensity. Earlier, in October 2025, a severe 6.9-magnitude earthquake impacted the central Philippines, leading to significant destruction, loss of life, and power outages in multiple regions.
This earlier incident originated close to BOGO City in Cebu province and occurred at a shallow depth of around five kilometers, exacerbating its effects. Initially, a tsunami warning was issued but was retracted after confirming the absence of dangerous sea waves.
Geographically, the Philippines ranks as one of the most earthquake-prone nations due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a vast zone renowned for its frequent seismic and volcanic activities, driven by the ongoing movement and interactions of major tectonic plates.
The seismic activity is chiefly influenced by the interaction of the Philippine Sea Plate with the Eurasian Plate. The subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate beneath the Philippine Microplate at the Philippine Trench occurs on the eastern boundary, while the Eurasian Plate descends under the islands along the Manila and Negros Trenches on the western front.
This unique double subduction zone generates considerable underground pressure, increasing the chance of severe earthquakes. Experts indicate that although Wednesday’s quake was sparked by a local fault, the ongoing stress from colliding tectonic plates makes the Philippines particularly susceptible to powerful seismic activities.
