Supplements are used by many people to boost health, increase energy, and help with weight loss. Popular supplements include green tea, turmeric, and other herbal products. Most people think they are safe because they are natural. But recent studies show that some supplements can harm the liver, especially when taken in high doses or with other medicines. This article explains which supplements may be risky and how to use them safely.
The liver is one of the most important organs in your body. It cleans toxins, helps digest food, and processes medicines and supplements.
If your liver gets damaged, it can cause serious problems like:
Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice)
Tiredness and weakness
Stomach pain
Digestive problems
In serious cases, liver failure
Even though herbal supplements seem safe, too much or improper use can damage your liver. Being careful can prevent long-term problems.
Green Tea Extract
Drinking green tea is safe, but concentrated green tea supplements can harm the liver. High amounts of catechins (the active ingredient) may cause inflammation and liver damage.
Turmeric (Curcumin)
Turmeric is known for reducing inflammation and being healthy. But high doses of turmeric supplements or mixing them with medicines can harm the liver. People with liver problems should be extra careful.
Kava
Kava is used to reduce anxiety and help relaxation. Some reports link kava to liver failure. Avoid using it with alcohol or other substances that stress the liver.
Weight Loss Supplements
Many weight loss supplements contain herbal extracts like green tea, garcinia cambogia, or usnic acid. These ingredients can hurt the liver in some cases. Always read labels and ask a doctor before taking them.
Black Cohosh
Black cohosh is used for menopause symptoms. Rarely, it may cause liver damage, especially if used for a long time or in high doses.
Comfrey
Comfrey is a herbal remedy for pain and inflammation. Its natural chemicals can be toxic to the liver if taken by mouth. Using it on the skin may be safer, but caution is still needed.
It’s important to notice liver problems early. Symptoms may include:
Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice)
Pain or swelling in the stomach
Feeling sick or vomiting
Dark-colored urine
Fatigue or weakness
Loss of appetite
If you notice these symptoms after taking a supplement, see a doctor immediately. Early treatment can prevent serious problems.
You can still take supplements safely if you follow these tips:
Follow the recommended dose – Don’t take more than what the label says.
Talk to a doctor – Especially if you have liver problems or take medicines.
Avoid mixing supplements – Taking many herbal products at the same time can stress your liver.
Check your liver health – Regular blood tests can detect early damage.
Choose trusted brands – Buy from reputable companies and avoid unknown or unregulated products.
Instead of relying only on supplements, you can protect your liver and health by:
Eating a balanced diet – Include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein.
Exercising regularly – Helps keep weight and liver fat under control.
Drinking enough water – Water helps your liver remove toxins.
Limiting alcohol – Alcohol can increase liver problems, especially with supplements.
Getting enough sleep – Sleep helps your liver repair itself.
