50 UAE students represent 15th district at Kerala Sports Meet

In a historic first, a team from the UAE is participating in the prestigious Kerala State School Sports Meet, which kicked off in Kochi this week. A total of 50 students from seven Indian schools across the UAE, which follow the Kerala State Board curriculum, are representing the UAE as the 15th district of Kerala. This marks a significant milestone for the UAE-based Indian schools, as they take part in what is regarded as the largest school sports competition in India, featuring around 24,000 students.

The participating schools from the UAE include New Indian Model School, Dubai; Gulf Model School, Dubai; Model Private School, Abu Dhabi; New Indian Model School, Sharjah; New Indian School, Ras Al Khaimah; Indian School, Fujairah; and New Indian School, Umm Al Quwain. These schools were invited by the Kerala government to represent the UAE for the first time, making it an extraordinary opportunity for the students. According to Abdul Nazar, Vice Principal (Admin) of New Indian Model School, Dubai, the invitation came after the Kerala government recognized the UAE as the 15th district of Kerala, a unique initiative that has not been extended to any other Gulf country.

The event, which runs until November 11, sees these students, all boys in grades 11 and 12, compete in senior category sports such as volleyball, basketball, football, and athletics. Despite limited preparation time, the excitement among the students is palpable, as they have trained for just two weeks following a selection trial. Nazar emphasized that while the students' participation is the highlight, results are not the primary focus this year. The aim for the future is to build a stronger and more prepared team for the next edition of the event.

The students were warmly welcomed upon their arrival at the airport, where they were received by Kerala’s Education Minister, V. Sivankutty. This experience is seen as a significant opportunity for the students to gain exposure and represent their schools and the UAE on an esteemed platform. While this year’s participation is more about the experience, next year, with additional preparation, the schools are hopeful to secure better results.

Nazar expressed pride in how the students and schools are united to represent the UAE in this significant sporting event. He also highlighted that this participation helps strengthen the ties between the UAE and Kerala, providing a platform for students to showcase their talents and take part in a global event.

The Kerala State School Sports Meet, with its diverse range of sporting events, provides young athletes from across India, including the UAE, with an opportunity to test their skills and be a part of a community of future sports leaders. It also serves as a symbol of the strong educational and cultural ties between India and the UAE, especially through the efforts of Indian schools in the UAE that follow the Kerala State Board curriculum.
