A violent attack at a tyre manufacturing facility in central Japan left 15 workers injured on Friday, triggering a swift emergency response and a major police investigation. Authorities confirmed that a 38-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder after allegedly stabbing several employees and throwing a chemical substance believed to be bleach.
The incident occurred at a factory operated by Yokohama Rubber Co. in the city of Mishima, located in Shizuoka prefecture, west of Tokyo. The plant manufactures tyres primarily for trucks and buses.
Multiple Workers Hospitalised
According to local fire officials, eight workers suffered stab wounds and were rushed to nearby hospitals. Five of those victims were reported to be in serious condition. Another seven people were injured after being exposed to a chemical substance thrown during the assault. All injured workers were hospitalised and are receiving medical treatment.
Emergency crews from the Fujisan Nanto Fire Department were among the first responders, securing the site and providing urgent medical care before transferring victims to hospitals across the region.
Suspect Arrested at Scene
Shizuoka prefectural police said the suspect was apprehended inside the factory shortly after the attack began. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive, nor have they confirmed whether the man was an employee of the company.
Police told Associated Press that questioning is ongoing as investigators work to establish the sequence of events and the suspect’s background.
Reports of Knife and Protective Gear
Local media reports added disturbing details to the incident. According to Asahi newspaper, the suspect was carrying a survival-style knife and appeared to be wearing a gas mask during the attack. Investigators are conducting forensic tests to determine the exact nature of the chemical used, with early indications suggesting it may have been bleach.
Factory Secured, Investigation Underway
Police cordoned off the factory soon after the attack to ensure there was no further danger to workers. Officers are collecting evidence, reviewing surveillance footage, and interviewing witnesses to build a full picture of what led to the violence.
Authorities confirmed that no additional injuries were reported after the suspect was taken into custody. Operations at the factory were halted as a precaution, and employees were evacuated while safety checks were carried out.
Company Yet to Issue Detailed Statement
Yokohama Rubber Co. has acknowledged the incident but has not released a detailed public statement. The company is expected to cooperate fully with investigators and provide support to affected workers and their families.
Growing Concern Over Workplace Safety
The attack has raised renewed concerns in Japan about workplace safety and emergency preparedness, especially following other recent incidents involving chemical exposure and mass injuries. Officials stressed that there is no ongoing threat to the wider public but urged companies to remain vigilant and review security measures.
Police said further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses and more information becomes available.
