11-Year-Old Chinese Boy Writes 600 Lines of Code to Build Rocket Yan Hongsen, an 11-year-old prodigy from Zhejiang, China, has captured the attention of millions after writing 600 lines of code to construct a rocket. According to the South China Morning Post, Yan's fascination with rockets began at the tender age of four, when he witnessed the awe-inspiring launch of the Long March-2. This moment ignited a passion in young Yan that has since driven him to pursue extensive self-study in physics and chemistry, alongside online courses.
Starting in August 2022, Yan dedicated 10 months to building his first homemade solid-fuel rocket. In June 2023, he launched the rocket, named Sen Xing. Despite a parachute malfunction causing it to crash, Yan approached the setback with remarkable composure, immediately analyzing the failure. "The nitrocellulose didn't explode as expected, and the spring and lithium battery were also damaged. Maybe there is still an issue with the rocket's body connection," Yan explained.
Undeterred by the crash, Yan is already planning his second rocket launch. His ultimate dream is to build a real rocket for China to explore the universe, and he hopes to gain admission to one of China's seven prestigious civilian defense universities.

Yan has been documenting his rocket development journey on social media, where he has amassed over 440,000 followers. His parents have been incredibly supportive, even converting their living room into a rocket research studio to accommodate his ambitions.
Yan's father expressed his pride and excitement about his son's accomplishments. "Although the rocket crashed, I considered its first flight a triumph. I was over the moon with excitement, but my son took it in stride, remaining remarkably calm and composed," he told the South China Morning Post. "I don't understand aerospace, but I will always accompany my son. As parents, we fully support our child's dreams. If he encounters technical difficulties that he can't solve, he always contacts me, and I try my best to reach out to experts for help."
Yan's achievements have drawn the attention of educators, tech enthusiasts, and space aficionados worldwide. On mainland Chinese social media, his story has gone viral, earning him a reputation as a prodigious talent. Comments have poured in, praising not only Yan but also his parents for their unwavering support. "His parents are remarkable for unconditionally supporting their child's dreams," wrote one user. Another commented, "This must be the youngest person to build a rocket in China. I'm so proud of him."
Yan Hongsen's journey is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and support in achieving extraordinary feats, inspiring many to dream big and reach for the stars.
