The 27-year-old German had a tough time in the hot weather on Rod Laver Arena, but he stepped up his game during the important tiebreaks to win the first two sets. Paul fought hard and won the third set, but Zverev played much better in the fourth set, winning it easily.
Zverev will now play the winner of the match between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals.
Zverev said after the match, “To be honest, I should have been losing two sets to love. He played better than me, and I wasn’t playing well. But somehow, I was up two sets, and then I only needed one more to win. The fourth set was definitely the best I played."
Paul, who had beaten Zverev in their last two matches, took an early lead in the first set, but Zverev fought back and won the tiebreak 7-1. Paul also broke Zverev’s serve in the second set and got a 3-0 lead, but Zverev broke back to tie the set, then won the tiebreak 7-0.
In the third set, Paul was strong and won it 6-2, but he couldn't keep the momentum going. Zverev took control of the fourth set, winning it 6-1, and ended the match with a dominant performance.
Zverev has now reached his ninth Grand Slam semi-final, the most by any active player who has not yet won a major title. He will now focus on reaching his first Grand Slam final.
