Videos have emerged on social media showing passengers assisting a fellow flyer who became trapped in an overhead bin during a harrowing incident aboard an Air Europa flight from Madrid to Montevideo. The flight, carrying 325 passengers on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, encountered severe turbulence necessitating an emergency landing in Natal, Brazil.
The turbulence caused passengers not wearing seatbelts to be thrown from their seats, some hitting the ceiling. Multiple injuries, including head, neck, and chest injuries, were reported among the passengers. Upon landing in Natal, over a dozen ambulances awaited to transport the injured to local hospitals.
Air Europa confirmed the incident, stating, "Our flight UX045 bound for Montevideo has been diverted to Natal airport (Brazil) due to strong turbulence." They assured that the plane landed safely and that minor injuries were promptly addressed.

Images shared on social media revealed broken ceiling panels and exposed pipes and wires inside the aircraft. Brazilian health authorities reported that forty passengers were hospitalized for abrasions and minor traumas, with eleven remaining hospitalized as of Monday afternoon.
Passengers from various nationalities, including Spain, Argentina, Uruguay, Israel, Bolivia, and Germany, were among those injured. Air Europa initially treated seven passengers for various injuries, with others receiving medical attention for bruises.
Plans were made for a replacement flight from Madrid to collect the passengers stranded in Natal while the damaged Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner underwent inspection.
