Vodafone Idea in talks with Elon Musk's Starlink, other Satcom firms

Vodafone Idea (Vi) has shared that it is in early talks with some satellite communication companies, including Elon Musk’s Starlink. The telecom company made this statement on Wednesday, just a week after its rivals, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio, signed deals with Starlink to bring satellite internet to India.

The news came after Indian stock exchanges asked Vodafone Idea for a reason behind its rising share price. Following this, Vodafone Idea’s stock went up by nearly 5% on Wednesday.

Vodafone Idea’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Jagbir Singh, said the company is looking at satellite services to offer network in areas that do not have mobile or broadband coverage. He explained that using satellites is the best option for such locations.

He added that Vi also plans to provide fixed wireless broadband in rural areas and small towns. He said that setting up regular broadband services in these areas is expensive, so using satellites is a better and cheaper option.

Last week, Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which owns Starlink, signed deals with Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio. Through this deal, Starlink will be able to sell its equipment through the retail stores of Airtel and Jio. This will give Starlink direct access to many stores across the country, making it easier for people to buy the service.

However, Starlink still needs approval from the Indian government before it can officially launch its services in India.

The growing interest in satellite internet shows how telecom companies are trying to expand their services to remote and rural areas. Since building mobile towers and laying fiber cables in such regions is costly, satellite internet is seen as a smart and affordable solution. With this, companies like Vodafone Idea hope to provide fast internet to areas with poor or no network.
