The Genome Centre at the General Department of Forensic Science and Criminology of Dubai Police has officially become a member of the International Pathogen Surveillance Network (IPSN). This is a global initiative launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) to improve the monitoring of infectious diseases and ensure faster responses to potential outbreaks.
The IPSN is a worldwide platform where experts and research institutions share knowledge and skills in tracking and identifying infectious diseases. By using genomic sequencing technology, the network can detect pathogens, allowing early identification of emerging health threats. This collaboration makes it easier for countries to respond quickly and effectively. By joining this network, Dubai Police will be able to work alongside leading global research centres and laboratories. This partnership will help develop innovative solutions to fight global health challenges and boost scientific progress.
Major General Ahmad Thani bin Ghulaita, Director of the General Department of Forensic Science and Criminology, said that becoming part of the IPSN shows Dubai Police’s leadership in genomics and environmental security. He explained that this step aligns with the UAE’s ongoing efforts to strengthen public health measures and protect the environment through advanced scientific methods.

Colonel Engineer Rashid Lootah, Deputy Director of the General Department of Forensic Science and Criminology for Technical Affairs, called the membership a significant achievement for Dubai Police. He said it would allow the force to create more effective solutions for detecting and responding to pathogens. He added that the Genome Centre will now have more opportunities to collaborate with international research organisations. This will lead to better knowledge-sharing and the development of new techniques to fight infectious diseases.
Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Muhammad Ali Al Marri, Director of the Genome Centre at Dubai Police, said that joining the IPSN will help the centre develop advanced technologies for monitoring diseases. This will strengthen biological security in the UAE. He also highlighted that the membership will allow Dubai Police to expand its research and technical partnerships globally, helping the force stay ahead in scientific advancements.
By becoming part of the IPSN, Dubai Police is reinforcing its commitment to public safety and scientific progress. This move reflects the force’s continuous efforts to use advanced technology and global cooperation to protect both health and environmental security.
