Known as “EJ,” Jordan was a well-known figure in the Formula 1 world. He was famous for his bold opinions, colorful outfits, and sharp sense of humor. He started his own racing team, Jordan Grand Prix, which competed in F1 from 1991 to 2005. After selling the team, he became a TV expert, where his fun and lively personality made him a fan favorite.
Jordan’s family described him as someone who brought “charisma, energy, and Irish charm” wherever he went. They said, “We all feel a big emptiness without him. He will be missed by many, but he leaves us with lots of happy memories to keep us smiling through the sadness.”
Formula 1 president Stefano Domenicali, who knew Jordan from his time at Ferrari, said Jordan was “a big part of F1’s history” and would be greatly missed. He added, “Eddie had endless energy. He always made people smile and stayed true and kind no matter what.”
Jordan played an important role in F1 history. In 1991, his team gave Michael Schumacher his first-ever F1 race. Schumacher, who later became a seven-time world champion, got his chance with Jordan’s team at the Belgian Grand Prix. The opportunity came suddenly after Jordan’s regular driver, Bertrand Gachot, was jailed for attacking a taxi driver. Even though Schumacher only raced once for Jordan before moving to Benetton, his debut with Jordan was the start of his legendary career.
Christian Horner, now Red Bull’s team boss, shared a memory from when he was a young driver. In 1991, Jordan told him, “Get a good sponsor … welcome to the Piranha Club!” Honoring Jordan’s memory, Horner said, “F1 has lost a legend.”
Jordan’s team helped build the careers of many drivers. In 1998, Damon Hill gave the team its first-ever win at the Belgian Grand Prix. The race was held in heavy rain, making the victory even more memorable. Jordan also worked with drivers like Rubens Barrichello and Heinz-Harald Frentzen. Frentzen had a fantastic season in 1999, finishing third in the drivers’ championship — Jordan’s best season ever.
Jordan sold his team in 2005, and it later went through many name changes. Today, it competes as Aston Martin. The team’s current boss, Andy Cowell, praised Jordan’s impact, saying, “Eddie Jordan was one of the greatest in motorsport. He was a unique and wonderful person who built this team and took it to F1. His vision created a legacy that still inspires us today.”
Jordan also helped manage top motorsport figures. He guided famous car designer Adrian Newey when he left Red Bull for Aston Martin last year.
In 2023, Jordan shared his cancer diagnosis with the public. On his podcast, he urged people to take their health seriously and get regular check-ups. He said, “Don’t delay or ignore it. Go and get tested. In life, you have chances — don’t waste them. Look after your body, guys.”
Jordan’s death is a huge loss to motorsport. He will be remembered for his big personality, his role in shaping F1, and his love for the sport. His legacy will live on through the drivers he mentored, the team he built, and the countless fans he entertained.
