A container vessel was damaged by a suspected projectile near the coast of the United Arab Emirates, raising fresh concerns about maritime security in the region as tensions continue to escalate in the Middle East.
According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the incident took place around 25 nautical miles northwest of Ras Al Khaimah, a coastal emirate in the United Arab Emirates. The ship’s master reported that the vessel sustained damage after being struck by a suspected but unidentified projectile.
The exact extent of the damage has not yet been confirmed and is currently being assessed by the crew onboard. However, the vessel’s master confirmed that all crew members are safe and accounted for.
UKMTO stated that the situation remains under investigation and advised ships operating in the area to exercise caution and immediately report any suspicious activity to authorities.
Concerns Over Strait of Hormuz Security
The incident comes at a time of growing tension surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy shipping routes. Nearly one-fifth of global oil supply passes through this narrow waterway every day, making any disruption a major concern for international markets and global energy security.
Reports have recently raised fears that Iran could be placing naval mines in the strait, a move that could threaten commercial shipping and increase oil prices worldwide.
Trump Warns Iran Over Naval Mines
Responding to the reports, Donald Trump, President of the United States, issued a strong warning to Iran. In a post on Truth Social, Trump called on Iran to immediately remove any mines that may have been placed in the Strait of Hormuz.
He warned that if mines were confirmed and not removed quickly, the United States could respond with severe military action. Trump also said the US military is using advanced technology and missile capabilities to target any boats attempting to lay mines in the waterway.
US Claims Destruction of Mine-Laying Boats
In another statement, Trump claimed that US forces had recently destroyed 10 inactive mine-laying boats or ships. According to him, additional operations may follow.
The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) also released a video on social media, saying US forces are working to reduce Iran’s ability to project power at sea and interfere with international shipping.
CENTCOM stated that Iranian forces have long threatened freedom of navigation in waters that are vital to global trade and energy transport.
Reports on Iran’s Naval Capabilities
According to reports cited by CNN, Iran may have already begun placing mines in the Strait of Hormuz. The report added that Iran still retains about 80% to 90% of its small boats and mine-laying vessels, meaning it could potentially deploy hundreds of mines in the waterway if tensions escalate further.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as investigations into the vessel damage near UAE waters continue.
