Mexican cyclist Isaac Del Toro delivered an impressive performance on the gravel roads of Tuscany to finish second in Stage 2 of the Tirreno-Adriatico, moving into the overall race lead and claiming the blue leader’s jersey.
The 206km stage started in Camaiore and ended in the historic hilltop town of San Gimignano. The route included several gravel sectors in the final part of the race, similar to the terrain used in the famous Strade Bianche race. Heavy rain made the roads slippery and challenging, creating difficult conditions for the riders.
The decisive moment came with about 5 kilometres remaining. Dutch rider Mathieu van der Poel launched a strong attack on one of the gravel sections. Del Toro reacted quickly and managed to catch him, becoming the only rider able to bridge the gap at that moment.
Soon after, Italian rider Giulio Pellizzari joined the pair, forming a leading group of three riders. The trio managed to pull away from the other race favourites as they tackled the final kilometres of the stage.
Despite the tough terrain and pressure from the chasing group, the three riders worked together and held their advantage until the finish line in San Gimignano. Del Toro crossed the line in second place, a result strong enough to move him into the overall lead of the race.
With this performance, Del Toro secured the blue leader’s jersey and strengthened his position as one of the top contenders in this year’s Tirreno-Adriatico.
