For twenty four years, Shoma Banerjee’s world revolved around a classroom. The rhythm of school bells, the curiosity of students, and the responsibility of shaping young minds defined her professional life. Teaching was not simply a career for her. It was a calling rooted in patience, compassion, and the belief that education can transform lives.
Yet somewhere within that structured routine, another voice quietly waited to be heard.
That voice belonged to her art.
Today, after more than two decades in education, Shoma Banerjee has stepped into a new identity as a full time artist and art therapist based in Dubai. Her journey is not a story of leaving teaching behind, but rather evolving it into a new form of service where creativity, culture, and healing meet.
Originally from India and a resident of Dubai for more than twenty two years, Shoma’s professional journey reflects both courage and transformation. For years she balanced her responsibilities as a teacher with her passion for art, often creating quietly in the margins of her sketchbooks while fulfilling the structured demands of the classroom.
The turning point came when she began reflecting on the message she was giving her own teenage children.
She had always encouraged them to follow their dreams and live courageously. Yet she realized that while she spoke those words, she herself remained within the safety of a conventional career. If she truly wanted to teach them about courage, she understood that she would have to demonstrate it through her own choices.
That realization became the beginning of a profound inner shift.
Shoma did not see her transition as abandoning education. Instead, she saw it as expanding its possibilities. Her passion for art gradually revealed another dimension of learning, one that could not be confined to textbooks or timetables. Art, she discovered, was capable of expressing emotions and stories that words often struggle to capture.
When she later qualified as a KHDA approved Art Therapist, the transformation felt complete.
She understood that her years in education had not been preparation for something new but rather the foundation for a deeper calling. Her ability to understand human emotions, developed through decades of teaching students of different ages, became a powerful tool in guiding individuals toward emotional healing.
Today, Shoma combines artistic practice with therapeutic work, helping people reconnect with their inner balance through creative expression.
A defining influence in her art comes from the traditional Kalighat style of Bengal. Rooted in the cultural heritage of eastern India, Kalighat art is known for its bold lines, expressive forms, and powerful simplicity. For Shoma, the style represents more than an aesthetic tradition. It carries a deeper philosophy.
Kalighat art teaches the beauty of essentials. With minimal lines and vibrant color, it conveys complex emotions and stories. Its simplicity allows the viewer to connect directly with the narrative without distraction.
As a Bengali artist living in Dubai, Shoma feels a strong responsibility to bring this cultural heritage to a global audience. In a city known for its diversity and creativity, she hopes her work can serve as a bridge between the rich artistic traditions of Bengal and the contemporary cultural landscape of the UAE.
For her, Indian art is not merely decorative. It is a sophisticated visual language that carries centuries of history, spirituality, and storytelling.
While her artistic practice celebrates heritage, her work as an art therapist focuses on healing.
In a fast paced city like Dubai, Shoma often encounters individuals struggling with what she describes as identity fatigue and high functioning anxiety. Many people remain constantly occupied with responsibilities, achievements, and expectations, yet rarely find the time to reconnect with themselves.
Through art therapy, she offers a space where logic can step aside and emotions can take the lead.
The creative process allows people to enter a state of flow where the mind quiets and the body relaxes. Patterns, repetition, and rhythm within artistic expression mirror the natural rhythms of breath and heartbeat. This connection can ground individuals who feel overwhelmed by the speed of modern life.
For Shoma, creativity is not simply an artistic activity. It is a scientific and therapeutic tool that supports emotional, physical, and psychological wellbeing.
Her approach blends traditional cultural art forms with contemporary psychological understanding. This intersection between heritage and healing is what she believes has been missing in many creative spaces.
Dubai offers art galleries and wellness clinics, but Shoma saw an opportunity to bring both worlds together. Her vision is to create environments where art is not only appreciated visually but experienced as a pathway to emotional clarity and self discovery.
Her own journey has required resilience.
Leaving a stable career after more than two decades can be unsettling. One of the most difficult adjustments, she admits, was the silence. After years surrounded by students and constant activity, the quiet solitude of an artist’s studio felt unfamiliar.
Over time, however, she learned to embrace that silence as a space where creativity could grow.
Perhaps the most rewarding moments now come from her family. When her children see her working late into the night on a painting or developing a therapy session, their pride reminds her that the leap of faith was worthwhile.
She believes that beginning again is not something to fear. It is something to embrace.
Looking ahead, Shoma hopes to expand collaborations with schools, wellness retreats, and cultural organizations across the UAE. She envisions programs that introduce heritage inspired art therapy to students and adults alike, encouraging individuals to explore both their creativity and emotional wellbeing.
Her dream is to build a community where people rediscover their voices through art.
At its heart, her story is about transformation.
It is about carrying one’s culture into new environments, honoring the past while creating the future, and recognizing that life’s second act can be just as powerful as the first.
For Shoma Banerjee, the classroom never truly disappeared. It simply expanded beyond four walls.
Now the lessons are written not on a whiteboard, but on canvas.
And the subject is the art of becoming who we were always meant to be.
