These social media posts appeared on websites like X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram. Some Chinese social media apps like Toutiao and Weibo were also used to spread the news. Experts say this shows how China can quickly spread news that makes it look like China is ahead of the US in making important technology.
Graphika, a company that studies online activity, said they also found a video online that showed a pro-China message. The video was linked to YouTube, and it was similar to other videos made in the past that were part of a group effort to influence opinions. The video talked about China in a way that was against the West.
When DeepSeek launched its new technology on January 20, many people started talking about it on X. The discussions became bigger as more people joined in over the weekend. By the time Monday came around, DeepSeek's free technology app had more downloads than the popular ChatGPT from the US. This caused many investors to start selling US tech stocks, and companies like Nvidia lost billions in just one day.
The success of DeepSeek's technology, which is cheaper than the US version, made some people worried that US companies might struggle to compete with China. DeepSeek's researchers say they created their technology for a much lower cost, and this has caused concern that it could lead to a price battle between US and Chinese companies.
Some US companies like Microsoft, which helped create ChatGPT, have seen slower growth in their business. Despite this, Microsoft and other companies have said they will continue to invest in technology.
In China, DeepSeek’s success is seen as a victory because it shows that China is moving forward despite the US trying to stop its technology growth by limiting exports.
In the US, people are asking if DeepSeek used technology from US companies like OpenAI without permission. These claims are not proven yet.
The US government is also looking into whether DeepSeek used computer chips from the US that are not allowed to be sold to China. This investigation could affect how DeepSeek operates in the future.
While DeepSeek’s success is a big deal in China, it is also causing concern in the US, where people are watching closely to see what happens next.
