UK Doctor Admits Attempting to Kill Mother's Partner with Bacteria

A Hong Kong-born doctor in the United Kingdom has confessed to an elaborate scheme to murder his mother's long-term partner, aiming to inherit her estate upon her death. Thomas Kwan, 53, previously a respected General Practitioner (GP) in Sunderland, admitted to injecting 72-year-old Patrick O'Hara with a fake Covid-19 booster that led to a severe and potentially fatal flesh-eating bacterial infection.

On January 22, Kwan disguised himself as a community nurse to carry out the sinister plan at his mother’s residence. According to court proceedings, he meticulously planned the attack for months, utilizing shell companies, counterfeit documents, and elaborate disguises to gain access to Mr. O'Hara.

Kwan sent two forged letters from doctors stating that Mr. O'Hara was due for a home visit for his Covid-19 vaccinations. On the day of the planned attack, he checked into a hotel under an alias before proceeding to his mother, Jenny Leung’s, house, where he spent approximately 45 minutes performing medical assessments and administering the phony vaccine. Kwan claimed he intended to cause "no more than mild pain and discomfort" to Mr. O'Hara.

However, following the injection, Mr. O'Hara experienced excruciating pain and sought medical attention at a hospital. Doctors diagnosed him with necrotizing fasciitis, a rare and life-threatening disease characterized by rapid tissue destruction. His condition required him to remain in intensive care for several weeks as surgeons worked to remove necrotic tissue from his arm in an effort to combat the infection.

During the trial, prosecutor Peter Makepeace revealed the depth of Kwan's premeditated plot, stating, "From November 2023 at the latest, and probably long before then, [Kwan] devised an intricate plan to kill his mother's long-term partner Patrick O'Hara ... It was a plan to murder a man in plain sight, to murder a man right in front of his own mother's eyes."

The court was informed that Mr. O'Hara had been named in Ms. Leung's will, which allowed him to stay in her house. This arrangement reportedly strained the mother-son relationship, as Kwan sought to eliminate Mr. O'Hara to secure his financial future.

Initially, Kwan pleaded not guilty to the charge of attempted murder, but he changed his plea following the prosecution's presentation of evidence. The judge, Mrs. Justice Lambert, indicated that Kwan would face a "substantial" prison sentence, with sentencing scheduled for October 17.
