The United Arab Emirates and Malaysia have significantly advanced their institutional cooperation by signing a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the UAE Accountability Authority and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
The MoU was officially inked in Abu Dhabi during a working visit by Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Haji Azam bin Baki, Chief Commissioner of the MACC, who was present at the signing ceremony. This agreement is geared towards fortifying collaboration in accountability and governance, exemplifying a mutual dedication to transparency and strong institutional ethics.
This initiative enhances the already robust economic partnership between both nations. In October 2025, the UAE and Malaysia enacted a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), aimed at boosting bilateral trade, drawing in investments, and enhancing private sector collaboration.
Remarkably, the CEPA stands as Malaysia's inaugural trade agreement with a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member, marking a significant development in Kuala Lumpur's relations with the Arab region. Bilateral trade between the UAE and Malaysia reached $5.5 billion in 2024, with aspirations to more than double that in the upcoming years.
Through the CEPA framework, both countries have pledged to lower or remove tariffs across a variety of goods, simplify customs procedures, and foster a more conducive atmosphere for business. A pivotal aim is to elevate non-oil trade to $13.5 billion by 2032, indicating a shift towards diversified and sustainable economic progress.
The newly signed MoU on accountability alongside the CEPA emphasizes a broader strategic partnership—blending economic aspirations with robust governance. This positions UAE-Malaysia relations for enduring, mutually beneficial development.
