The event brought together government officials, business experts, and small business owners. They talked about how small businesses can reduce pollution in their supply chains, especially in industries like construction and manufacturing.
The main topics discussed were how to get funding for green projects, how to use new green technologies, and how to track and report pollution levels better. These steps will help small businesses become more eco-friendly and tackle climate change.
According to the UAE Ministry of Economy, small businesses are very important. They make up 94% of all businesses in the UAE and provide jobs for 86% of the workers. The meeting looked at how these small businesses can adopt green methods, face challenges, and contribute to fighting pollution.
Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, President and CEO of UICCA, said: "Small businesses are very important in solving climate problems. They have the potential to help reduce pollution but face challenges like not having access to green funding or understanding new rules. This meeting will give them the tools and advice they need to go green."
His Excellency Alexander Schönfelder, the German Ambassador to the UAE, said: "Small businesses are the backbone of economies around the world. They are creative and can play a big role in reducing pollution. However, they face challenges like a lack of access to funding and new green technologies. With proper support, they can help build a cleaner and greener future."
Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, CEO of EMSTEEL, said: "Small businesses are a key part of the UAE’s economy. At EMSTEEL, we focus on producing steel in a sustainable way and teaching small businesses how to adopt green practices. This will help protect the environment and create fair business practices."
The meeting had 49 participants from both the government and private sectors. A discussion was held with business leaders like Pavan Chilukuri from Holcim Technology Ltd, Dr Dimitrios Dimitriou from EMSTEEL, Adrienne Doolan from Sustain Global, and Dr Thomas Soulas from Siemens Energy Innovation Centre Abu Dhabi. They shared solutions and challenges that small businesses face in their efforts to cut down pollution.
After the discussion, smaller workshops took place. These workshops created practical solutions such as making it easier for small businesses to get funding, using new green technologies, and improving the way they track and report pollution levels.
UICCA, the German Embassy, and the Climate Talks Initiative will soon release a report. This report will include the main points from the event and share the solutions discussed. It will be sent to leaders and experts in the UAE and Germany to encourage future actions to reduce pollution and support small businesses.
The event showed UICCA’s goal to support small businesses and help them take part in the fight against climate change. The UICCA Policy Hacks bring groups together to find solutions and build a cleaner, greener world.
