Former Bangladesh cricket captain Tamim Iqbal suffered a major heart attack while playing in a domestic match but is now recovering, according to cricket officials.

The 36-year-old cricketer was leading his team, Mohammedan Sporting Club, in a match of the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League on Monday when he suddenly felt severe chest pain. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital.

A club official, Tariqul Islam, gave an update on Tamim’s condition, saying, “He is now better. He talked to his family members and even walked for a short time in the hospital.”

Mohammedan’s physiotherapist, Enamul Haque, also shared good news about Tamim’s health. He said that Tamim’s condition was stable and that he might soon be moved to another hospital for further treatment. “We had to act quickly to save his life, and thankfully, we did,” Enamul told reporters.

When Tamim was taken to the hospital, his condition was critical, said Dr. Razeeb Hasan, the medical director of the hospital where he was treated. To save his life, doctors performed surgery and placed stents in his heart to clear a blocked artery.

As soon as the news of Tamim’s heart attack spread, there was an outpouring of support from cricketers and fans around the world. His long-time teammate and fellow Bangladeshi cricketer, Shakib Al Hasan, asked everyone to pray for Tamim’s quick recovery. “Please pray that my brother Tamim recovers quickly and returns to the game!” Shakib wrote on social media.

Tamim’s heart attack happened on the same day as Shakib’s 38th birthday. Shakib said he could not enjoy his special day because he was so worried about his friend.

Indian cricket star Yuvraj Singh also sent his best wishes. “You’ve faced tough opponents before and come out stronger. This will be no different. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Stay strong,” Yuvraj wrote on social media.

Tamim Iqbal is one of Bangladesh’s greatest cricketers. Between 2007 and 2023, he played 391 matches in all formats for the national team and also served as the captain of the one-day team. He has scored over 15,000 international runs and is the only Bangladeshi player to score centuries in Test, ODI, and T20 cricket.

Fans and cricket lovers around the world are praying for Tamim’s full recovery, hoping to see him back in the cricket world soon.
