Chennai: Tamil actor and director Manoj Bharathiraja, son of the legendary filmmaker Bharathiraja, passed away due to a heart attack at his home in Chetpet, Chennai, on March 25. He was 48 years old.
According to reports, Manoj had recently undergone bypass surgery. Sadly, around 4 pm on Tuesday, he suffered a fatal heart attack at his residence. He is survived by his wife, Ashwathi alias Nandana, and their two daughters, Arshitha and Mathivathani. Details regarding his funeral and final rites are still awaited.
The sudden death of Manoj Bharathiraja has left Tamil Nadu in shock. His fans, colleagues, and prominent figures from the film industry have been expressing their grief and paying tributes on X.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin shared his condolences, saying he was deeply saddened by Manoj’s unexpected passing. He recalled Manoj’s debut in the film Taj Mahal, directed by his father, and praised his work in movies like Samuthiram, Alli Arjuna, and Varushamellam Vasantham, where he left a mark with his performances. Stalin also mentioned Manoj’s efforts in film direction, highlighting his contribution to Tamil cinema.
In his message, Stalin wrote that the sudden death of Manoj at such a young age was deeply painful. He extended his heartfelt condolences to Bharathiraja and his family, expressing sympathy for their loss.
Legendary music composer Ilaiyaraaja also expressed his sorrow. He said he was heartbroken by the passing of Manoj, the son of his dear friend Bharathiraja. Ilaiyaraaja called it a tragic loss and said that while fate offers no choice, he prays for Manoj’s soul to rest in peace.
Actor-politician Sarathkumar, who worked alongside Manoj in the film Samuthiram, also shared his grief. He called Manoj’s death "heart-shattering" and remembered the times they played brothers on screen. Sarathkumar recalled Manoj’s versatility as an actor and said that his sudden passing is a reminder of how uncertain life can be. He offered his condolences to Bharathiraja and his family, saying no words could ease their pain.
Director Venkat Prabhu, who was a close friend of Manoj, also expressed his shock. He shared an old photo with Manoj and their friends, writing that he couldn't believe Manoj was gone. Prabhu said he would miss his "brother" and extended his deepest condolences to Bharathiraja and the entire family.
Actress and politician Khushbu Sundar mourned Manoj’s untimely demise. She wrote that she was deeply saddened by his sudden passing at the young age of 48. She prayed for Bharathiraja and his family, hoping they would find the strength to overcome this painful loss.
Director Halitha Shameem also paid tribute. She said she was shocked by Manoj’s passing, describing him as a creative artist with so much more to offer. She fondly remembered his song 'Eechi Elumichi' from Taj Mahal, which she considered her all-time favorite. She expressed her regret that she never got the chance to ask Manoj to sing for one of her films.
Manoj Bharathiraja began his acting career in 1999 with the film Taj Mahal, directed by his father. Although the film did not do well at the box office, its AR Rahman-composed songs were widely loved by the audience. Manoj went on to act in several films, including Samuthiram, Alli Arjuna, Varushamellam Vasantham, Maha Nadigan, Maanaadu, and Viruman. His performances were praised for their natural and heartfelt portrayal.
Apart from acting, Manoj also pursued film direction. He even showcased his talent as a playback singer in Taj Mahal, where he sang the popular song 'Eechi Elumichi', composed by AR Rahman.
Manoj Bharathiraja’s last on-screen appearance was in the Prime Video series 'Snakes and Ladders'.
The sudden and untimely death of Manoj Bharathiraja has left the Tamil film industry and his fans in deep sorrow. He will be remembered as a talented actor, director, and singer whose life was tragically cut short far too soon.
