FIFA has revealed record-breaking interest in World Cup 2026 tickets, with over 500 million applications submitted by fans globally. This figure marks a significant milestone as the ticket application window for the lottery draw has just closed.

Supporters from all 211 FIFA member nations expressed their desire to attend the expanded tournament featuring 48 teams across the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Those lucky enough to secure tickets will be notified starting February 5, as the lottery allocation process gets underway.

Global Fascination With Football

While host nation fans exhibited significant interest, the highest number of applications from countries outside the host nations came from Germany, England, Brazil, Spain, Portugal, Argentina, and Colombia. This enthusiasm exemplifies the World Cup’s immense global allure.

The most sought-after match will be Colombia's showdown with Portugal in Miami on June 27, followed by Mexico's match against South Korea in Guadalajara on June 18. The final match in New Jersey on July 19 is also drawing considerable attention.

FIFA Acknowledges Fan Passion

FIFA President Gianni Infantino termed the influx of requests as historic: “Half a billion requests in just over a month highlights the importance of this moment on a global scale.” He expressed appreciation for fans worldwide while recognizing the challenge of accommodating them all.

“It's unfortunate we can't let every fan into the stadiums,” he remarked, noting the complexity of catering to such an unprecedented demand.

Concerns Regarding Ticket Costs

Despite the remarkable interest, FIFA has faced backlash over ticket pricing, with many fans labeling them as “astronomical” and out of reach for the average supporter. Ticket costs for the 2026 tournament are reported to be nearly five times higher than those for the 2022 World Cup.

In response, FIFA rolled out a new category of more affordable tickets last December, with options available starting from $60 (approximately €51) to make the event accessible for more fans.

A Landmark Event in Sports History

The 2026 World Cup is poised to be one of the most significant and well-attended football spectacles ever. Even amidst ongoing discussions about ticket prices, the overwhelming number of requests demonstrates a universal eagerness to experience the tournament live.
