Companies focused on solar energy are experiencing rapid growth in Central and West Africa, where many of the poorest households remain off the electrical grid. These African-owned businesses are stepping in to address significant infrastructure challenges and the impacts of climate change. They provide a variety of products, from simple solar-powered lamps that enable children to study at night to sophisticated home systems that can power kitchen appliances and televisions.
In Central and West Africa, where electrification rates are among the lowest globally, approximately 600 million people lack access to electricity. In West Africa alone, about 220 million individuals live without power, translating to electrification rates as low as 8%, according to the World Bank. As a result, many households rely on costly kerosene and other fuels that emit harmful fumes and pose fire risks. The urgent need for reliable and affordable energy has led to a surge in solar energy solutions across the region.

Recent climate summits have set a target of tripling renewable energy generation capacity by 2050. Despite Africa being a minimal contributor to global carbon emissions, solar energy has emerged as an effective and cost-efficient means of providing electricity.
that small and medium-sized solar enterprises are making strides in delivering power to households. However, substantial investment is still necessary to achieve universal electrification in Africa by 2030.
Among the fast-growing companies in this sector is Easy Solar, a locally owned firm recognized by the Financial Times' annual ranking of Africa's fastest-growing companies for 2023. Easy Solar provides solar power solutions to homes and businesses in Sierra Leone and Liberia. Co-founder Nthabiseng Mosia, who experienced frequent power cuts growing up in Ghana, was inspired to tackle Africa’s energy challenges while studying in the U.S. After launching the company in 2016, Easy Solar has since connected over a million people to solar power in Sierra Leone and Liberia.
The company began its journey with a pilot project in Songo, near Sierra Leone’s capital, Freetown. Although initial adoption was slow due to concerns about costs, community interest surged as residents witnessed their neighbors benefiting from solar-powered lights. “We have long forgotten about kerosene,” said Haroun Patrick Samai, a land surveyor and Songo resident. “Before Easy Solar, we lived in constant danger of fire outbreaks from candles and kerosene.”
Another notable player, Altech, based in Congo, has also seen significant growth, ranking among Africa’s fastest-growing companies. Co-founders Washikala Malango and Iongwa Mashangao, who fled conflict in South Kivu province, launched Altech in 2013. The company aims to address the power challenges they faced growing up in a refugee camp where kerosene was the primary light source.
Currently, Altech operates in 23 of the 26 provinces in Congo, planning to reach the remaining areas by the year's end. The company has sold over one million solar-powered products, catering to homes and businesses with various solutions, including lighting, appliances, and generators.
As the demand for renewable energy solutions continues to grow in Central and West Africa, these companies are pivotal in improving living conditions and expanding access to electricity. By addressing the urgent need for affordable energy, they are not only providing essential services but also paving the way for a more sustainable future for millions of Africans who currently live without power.
