At a campaign rally in North Carolina on Friday, former President Donald Trump announced his intention to create a task force aimed at monitoring what he referred to as “woke generals” in the military. Trump also expressed his desire to eliminate diversity training for military personnel, framing it as part of a broader effort to counter perceived liberal influences within the armed forces.

This initiative echoes events from 2021 when veteran F-15 pilot Matthew Lohmeier was relieved of his command in the Space Force after publicly criticizing diversity and inclusion training on a conservative podcast. During his appearance on the Information Operation program, Lohmeier asserted that such training was rooted in Marxism and critical race theory, concepts that have been politically weaponized by the Republican Party to criticize various identity and inclusion initiatives.
Following his dismissal, Lohmeier published a book titled *Irresistible Revolution: Marxism's Goal of Conquest & the Unmaking of the American Military*, in which he elaborated on these ideas. At the rally, he described the so-called “woke generals” as “monsters” who were undermining the unity of American troops. Lohmeier urged Trump, if re-elected, to establish a committee to oversee and monitor progressive ideologies in the military.
Trump enthusiastically endorsed Lohmeier’s proposal, promising, “I'm going to put you on that task force,” which elicited cheers from the rally attendees. This rhetoric is not new for Trump, who has frequently criticized the military establishment for adopting “woke” policies, despite the military's traditionally nonpartisan nature.
In 2021, Trump called for the resignation of Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mark Milley, falsely claiming that Milley had defended critical race theory during congressional hearings. Trump characterized Milley's approach as a betrayal, insisting that he should be replaced by someone who would defend the military against “leftist radicals.”
Milley’s defense of diversity training came during a congressional appearance where he connected social justice issues to the events of January 6th, stating, “I want to understand white rage, and I’m white, and I want to understand it. What is it that caused thousands of people to assault this building and try to overturn the constitution of the United States of America, what caused that? I want to find that out.”
In the wake of these controversies, the Department of Homeland Security issued a report identifying domestic violent extremism, including threats from within the security services, as a significant national security concern. According to the Anti-Defamation League, the majority of extremist-related murders in the U.S. over the past decade have been attributed to right-wing extremists.
