World No. 2 Jannik Sinner showed strong determination as he fought back to defeat Brazil’s young star Joao Fonseca and secure a place in the Indian Wells quarter-finals on Tuesday.
The Italian tennis star faced a tough challenge from the 19-year-old Brazilian, who started the match strongly and won the opening set 6-3. Fonseca served well and kept Sinner under pressure in the early stages of the match.
However, Sinner responded with confidence and experience in the next two sets. Both sets went to tense tiebreaks, where Sinner kept his composure to win 7-6(6), 7-6(4) and complete a hard-fought victory.
Speaking after the match, Sinner praised his opponent’s performance and talent.
“I am very happy winning this match,” Sinner said. “Joao is an incredible talent. He was serving really well. I was trying to be as aggressive as possible, and that was the key to get through against the incredible talent.”
With this win, Sinner moves into the quarter-finals of the tournament, where he will face American player Learner Tien on Friday.
Sinner also acknowledged the improvement in his next opponent’s game. “I feel he is a very consistent player, and I am very happy to face him again. He has improved a lot since the last time we met,” he said.
The upcoming match promises to be an exciting contest as Sinner continues his campaign for the Indian Wells title.
