His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has issued an Emiri Decree to establish and regulate the Sharjah Communication Technologies Free Zone. Named the "Sharjah Communication Technologies Free Zone" (COMTECH), this new initiative aims to bolster Sharjah's position in the field of communication technologies and contribute significantly to its economic growth.
According to the decree, the free zone will operate under the authority of the Sharjah Communications Technologies Authority, enjoying financial and administrative autonomy. The specific location, boundaries, and geographical area of the zone will be determined by the Ruler of Sharjah.
COMTECH is set to achieve several strategic objectives:
1. Enhancing Sharjah's global standing in communication technologies.
2. Attracting investments, partnerships, and skilled professionals in the sector.
3. Supporting technological advancements, including artificial intelligence and future technologies.
4. Facilitating the establishment of data centers and institutions focused on artificial intelligence.
5. Developing local talent in science and technology and attracting international expertise.
To accomplish these goals, the zone has been granted extensive powers:
1. Formulating legislation, policies, and strategic plans aligned with international standards.
2. Ensuring compliance with international agreements and treaties.
3. Developing and implementing communication technology policies and strategies.
4. Issuing licenses for companies involved in communication technology infrastructure.
5. Establishing data centers and providing necessary technical and administrative support.
6. Collaborating with relevant authorities and international agencies.
7. Forming partnerships and agreements on various levels.
8. Managing assets and investments in accordance with legal regulations.
The Sharjah Communications Technologies Free Zone will be overseen by a Chairman appointed by the Ruler, with operational duties handled by a Director appointed as necessary. The Director will be empowered to formulate policies, execute programs, and manage the zone's administrative, financial, and organizational affairs. The organizational structure and operational framework will be defined by subsequent Emiri Decrees.
