Researchers at Würzburg University Medicine have made a significant breakthrough in understanding the role of vitamin B6 in brain function and its potential implications for treating mental and neurodegenerative disorders. Vitamin B6, crucial for brain metabolism, has long been associated with memory and mood disorders when levels are insufficient. Despite the known benefits of increasing B6 intake, such as through supplements, this approach alone has proven inadequate in addressing complex brain-related conditions.
The study, published in the prestigious journal eLife, reveals that inhibiting the degradation of vitamin B6 within cells could offer a promising new treatment avenue. Led by Professor Antje Gohla from the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg, the research team collaborated with experts from the Rudolf Virchow Center and other institutions to explore this novel approach.

Their findings indicate that inhibiting the enzyme pyridoxal phosphatase, responsible for breaking down vitamin B6, can effectively raise B6 levels within nerve cells crucial for learning and memory processes. This discovery builds on previous studies demonstrating improved spatial learning and memory in mice when the enzyme was genetically switched off.
In their latest experiments, the team identified a natural compound, 7,8-Dihydroxyflavone, capable of inhibiting pyridoxal phosphatase and thereby preserving vitamin B6 levels in nerve cells. This substance has already shown promise in enhancing learning and memory in disease models for mental disorders, underscoring its potential as a therapeutic agent.
The researchers emphasize that while these findings are promising, translating them into practical treatments for mental and neurodegenerative diseases will require further development. Future efforts will focus on refining inhibitors of pyridoxal phosphatase to maximize their effectiveness in clinical settings.
Overall, this study not only enhances our understanding of vitamin B6's role in mental health but also proposes a new strategy for developing drugs that could significantly impact the treatment of brain disorders in the future.
