In a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll that concluded on Tuesday, 32% of Democrats expressed the belief that President Joe Biden should abandon his re-election bid following a debate where he struggled with frequent stammering and appeared hesitant in countering Republican Donald Trump's attacks, which included several false claims.
Despite this sentiment among some Democrats, the poll indicated that both Biden, 81, and Trump, 78, continue to hold the support of 40% of registered voters each, suggesting no significant shift in Biden's standing post-debate. The upcoming Election Day is slated for November 5.
Among the potential contenders from the Democratic side, only Michelle Obama, the former First Lady and author of the bestselling memoir "Becoming," performed better than Biden in hypothetical matchups against Trump. Michelle Obama led Trump by 50% to 39% in the poll, although she has repeatedly stated she has no intentions of running for president.

The poll highlighted that Biden's hypothetical replacements from within the Democratic ranks fared similarly or less effectively than Biden himself in matchups against Trump. Vice President Kamala Harris, for instance, trailed Trump by just one percentage point, 42% to 43%, a statistically insignificant difference within the poll's margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.
Despite concerns among some Democrats about Biden's candidacy, he has maintained his commitment to remain in the race. However, the poll revealed that potential Democratic replacements, including California Governor Gavin Newsom and others like Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, faced challenges in matching Biden's support levels against Trump.
The survey, conducted online and encompassing 1,070 US adults nationwide, underscored broader uncertainties within the Democratic Party about Biden's ability to secure re-election and the competitive landscape against Trump in the upcoming election cycle.
