Two Killed, Others Injured in July Fourth Attack at California Beach City; Investigation Underway

In a tragic incident during a neighborhood Fourth of July gathering, two people were killed and three others injured in a Southern California beach city. The attack, which occurred in Huntington Beach, also known as “Surf City USA,” took place less than two hours after the city's fireworks display ended about a mile away, police reported on Friday.

Authorities said that the violence erupted on Thursday night, involving an "assault with a deadly weapon." The crime scene, located on a grassy median in a residential neighborhood lined with palm trees, was cordoned off as the investigation continued. The county coroner's office removed two bodies from the scene on Friday morning.

A 26-year-old Huntington Beach resident has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, according to city spokeswoman Jennifer Carey. However, officials have released no further details about the suspect or the specifics of the attack.

The neighborhood, known for its proximity to the beach, was in shock following the incident. Evidence of the gathering, including chairs, a cooler, and drink cans, remained scattered on the grassy median, along with remnants of fireworks. Curious residents and passersby on bicycles approached the crime scene tape on Friday morning, seeking information about the tragedy.

Local resident Al Pacella, who knows one of the victims, described the gathering as a casual neighborhood get-together for the holiday. “Everybody there is really nice and easygoing, they’re all neighborly and help each other out,” Pacella said. He mentioned that he had stopped by the party briefly before heading home and later saw police lights outside his window. “It’s heartbreaking," he added. “It’s just tragic.”

The district attorney’s office noted that they had not yet received the case from the police by Friday morning, but charges could be filed as early as Monday. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Orange County coroner stated that details about the victims' fatal wounds were not yet available. The mayor did not respond to a request for comment.

This incident is part of a broader pattern of violence reported across the country during the extended Fourth of July weekend, historically one of the nation’s deadliest periods. Shootings and other violent acts have left at least 18 people dead nationwide, including 11 in Chicago, and have injured dozens more.

The Huntington Beach community remains in mourning as they grapple with the senseless violence that marred their Independence Day celebrations. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, seeking justice for the victims and their families.
