German City Temporarily Renamed to Honor Taylor Swift Ahead of Eras Tour Concert

Gelsenkirchen, a city in western Germany, is preparing for a unique tribute to Taylor Swift ahead of her upcoming Eras Tour concerts. The city has decided to temporarily rename itself "Swiftkirchen" in honor of the popstar's performances scheduled from July 17 to 19. This decision came about following a passionate initiative by Aleshanee Westhoff from Emmerich, a dedicated Taylor Swift fan who started a petition and personally wrote to Mayor Karin Welge advocating for the renaming.

Mayor Welge enthusiastically approved the proposal, emphasizing the city's excitement to host Taylor Swift and her devoted fanbase, known as 'Swifties'. In response to the announcement, signs bearing the new moniker, which translates to "Swift's Church," are being prominently displayed throughout Gelsenkirchen. The first sign, marking the entrance to "Swiftkirchen," was ceremoniously installed on Ebertstrasse by Westhoff.

Markus Schwardtmann, head of the city's public relations department, expressed that today marks the beginning of the city's preparations. Over the coming days, numerous signs will be erected in key locations across Gelsenkirchen to celebrate the occasion. Additionally, a specially themed "Taylor Swift tram" operated by Bogestra has been launched, promising to be a popular spot for selfies with its distinctive red decor.

In further homage to the international music sensation, Taylor Swift will be commemorated with a personalized stone on the Gelsenkirchen Walk of Fame, joining the ranks of local luminaries like soccer coach Rudi Assauer and writer Ilse Kibgis. The city is planning an array of surprises and events for Swifties, culminating in a grand "Taylor Town" open-air party featuring activities such as a swap market, karaoke, and even Taylor Swift-themed tattoos.

Mayor Welge expressed pride in welcoming Taylor Swift, acknowledging her as the world's leading artist and anticipating significant global attention on Gelsenkirchen, especially following EURO 2024. This gesture of renaming Gelsenkirchen echoes a similar tribute during Taylor Swift's Eras Tour launch last year, when Glendale, Arizona, temporarily became "Swift City" in honor of her performance there.
