Locations: Mandalay (Myanmar), Bangkok (Thailand)
Date: March 29, 2025
At exactly 12:50 PM local time on March 28, a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar, shaking cities and villages and causing massive destruction. The quake’s force didn’t stop at Myanmar — it reached as far as Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, where buildings swayed, panic spread, and a building collapsed. This earthquake has shocked the region and left behind a trail of destruction, death, and fear — but also stories of survival and unity.
The earthquake’s center was just 60 km from Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city. Homes were destroyed, bridges cracked, and ancient monasteries that had stood for centuries collapsed in seconds. So far, at least 144 people have died and over 700 are injured. Many remote villages in the Sagaing and Magway regions are still unreachable. Emergency rescue teams are working day and night, but damaged roads and communication problems are slowing them down. Myanmar’s military government has declared a state of emergency in six areas and is asking for help from the international community.
🇹🇭 Bangkok: Building Collapse in the Capital
Even though Bangkok is more than 1,000 kilometers from the earthquake’s center, it still felt strong tremors. In the Chatuchak district, a 30-story building under construction collapsed, killing nine people and injuring many more. Over 100 people are still missing under the rubble.
Our DXB News correspondant visited the site and spoke to a rescue worker who said: “We found a man alive after 11 hours. His first words were, ‘Is my wife safe?’ He didn’t know she had been working on the 14th floor. The governor of Bangkok has now declared the city a disaster zone. Officials are checking buildings across the city for damage, and people have been warned to stay alert for aftershocks, which could continue for several days.
China’s Yunnan province reported building damage and two injuries.
India’s capital, New Delhi, felt tremors and evacuated buildings.
Vietnam, including Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, felt the quake and closed some schools.
Airports such as Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi were temporarily closed. Stock markets in Asia showed drops in sectors like construction and insurance. The United Nations has released $5 million in emergency aid to Myanmar. India, Japan, and Australia have already sent rescue and medical teams. Across both countries, local people are donating food, medicine, and blood to help the injured.
This tragedy has shown how dangerous nature can be — but also how strong people can be when they help each other. From monks in Myanmar who opened temples to shelter people, to engineers in Bangkok risking their lives to save strangers, the region is coming together in this difficult time.
