OpenAI Limits ChatGPT Image Generation Amid High Demand

OpenAI has decided to put temporary limits on image creation in ChatGPT because too many people are using it at the same time. The company’s computer systems could not handle the high demand, and this caused problems.

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, shared the news on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday evening. He said, "It’s fun to see people enjoy making images in ChatGPT, but our computers are struggling." He explained that OpenAI will slow things down for a while so they can fix the issue. He also said these limits will not last long.

One of the biggest changes is that free users will soon be allowed to create only three images per day.

The reason for this sudden rush is because OpenAI launched a new and improved image tool inside ChatGPT on Wednesday. This tool, which works with the GPT-4o model, allows users to make more detailed images, add text inside pictures, and even edit images through conversation. The tool became very popular, very fast.

One of the most famous trends that started after this update was the "Ghibli-style" image trend. People began using ChatGPT to turn their photos, memes, and movie scenes into drawings that looked like famous Studio Ghibli animations. Many companies and even celebrities joined the trend by sharing their own AI-made pictures.

Sam Altman also took part in the fun. He changed his profile picture on X to a Ghibli-style version of himself. He even joked, "I changed my picture, but maybe someone will make a better one for me."

Because of this huge wave of people creating images, OpenAI had to slow things down. They first tried to delay access for some users, but even that was not enough. So, they finally decided to limit how many images people can create per day.

This situation shows that AI image-making needs a lot of computer power. OpenAI’s decision to set limits reminds us that even big tech companies struggle when too many people use a tool at the same time.

OpenAI has promised that these limits are only temporary. They are now working on making their systems stronger so that more people can enjoy AI-generated images without slowing everything down.
