This Sunday, Myanmar is set to hold elections despite being mired in a severe civil war that has ravaged significant areas. The conflict, ignited by the military coup in 2021 that ousted Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi's government, has led to one of the worst humanitarian situations in Asia.
According to the United Nations, over 3.6 million individuals have been uprooted from their homes, with thousands of civilians losing their lives since the coup. The ongoing inflation and declining currency values have plunged nearly half of the population of 51 million below the poverty line, leaving around 20 million people in desperate need of assistance.
The World Food Programme reports that more than 16 million people are currently experiencing severe food shortages. The situation is alarming, with over 540,000 children anticipated to suffer from acute malnutrition this year—a notable increase compared to last year. Chronic hunger and stunting have been observed in one out of every three children under five years old.
On the economic front, Myanmar is showing cautious signs of recovery. The World Bank forecasts a projected 3% GDP growth for the next fiscal year, driven by reconstruction initiatives following a catastrophic earthquake in March and targeted financial aid. However, inflation persists at over 20%, leading many households and businesses to rely on solar energy due to frequent power outages.
In the international arena, dynamics are evolving. Recent agreements between Russia and Myanmar's military junta have opened prospects for Russian energy businesses despite the ongoing global sanctions.
As the nation gears up for voting, Myanmar's future remains precarious amidst the ongoing strife, economic difficulties, and an escalating humanitarian crisis.
