For many people, the day does not feel complete until they have had their first cup of tea. A warm cup in the morning helps the mind wake up and gives a sense of comfort. In countries like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the UAE, and the United Kingdom, morning tea is a daily tradition.
But health experts warn that a few common habits connected to morning tea might be harming your health without you realising it.
This report explains the mistakes people often make with their morning tea, how these habits affect the body, and how to enjoy tea in a healthier way.
Many people drink tea the moment they get out of bed, but this can cause several problems.
Why this is harmful:
Increases acidity
May cause nausea or stomach discomfort
Irritates the lining of the stomach
Reduces the body’s ability to absorb iron from food
Tea contains caffeine and tannins, which increase stomach acid. On an empty stomach, this acid has nothing to work on, which can lead to irritation.
Better choice:
Drink a glass of warm water first. Have your tea after eating something small like fruit, nuts, or a few soaked almonds.
A lot of people add two or more teaspoons of sugar to each cup of tea. Some drink several cups a day, which increases their total sugar intake.
Why too much sugar is risky:
Causes weight gain
Raises the chances of diabetes
Leads to sudden energy highs and lows
Affects heart health
Better choice:
Reduce sugar slowly. You can try using a small amount of honey or jaggery, or train your taste buds to enjoy tea with very little sugar.
Many homes boil tea leaves for a long time, believing it will give stronger flavour. However, this reduces the health benefits.
Problems caused by over-boiling:
Tea becomes bitter
Antioxidants get destroyed
Caffeine level increases, which may cause headaches
Better method:
Boil the water first, then add tea leaves and let them simmer for just 1–2 minutes.
Tea with a lot of milk is popular in many households, but using excessive milk can reduce the nutritional value of tea.
Why too much milk is not ideal:
Reduces the body’s ability to absorb antioxidants
May cause bloating if you cannot digest lactose well
Makes tea heavy on the stomach
Better choice:
Use only a small amount of milk or try alternatives like black tea, green tea, or lemon tea once in a while.
Some people drink two or more cups within the first hour of waking up.
Why this is harmful:
Too much caffeine can cause dehydration
Increases acidity
May lead to anxiety or restlessness
Can disturb natural energy levels
Better choice:
Have only one cup in the morning. If you want more, drink it later in the day.
Many people skip breakfast and have only tea, which is not healthy.
Why this is a bad habit:
Causes a drop in blood sugar
Makes you tired and irritable
Leads to overeating later
Slows down metabolism
Better choice:
Have a simple breakfast like fruit, oats, eggs, or nuts before or along with your tea.
Some people drink tea when it is piping hot, but this can harm your throat.
Possible risks:
Irritates the throat
Can burn the mouth or throat lining
May increase the risk of oesophageal problems over time
Better choice:
Let your tea cool a little before drinking.
Cheap tea powders sometimes contain tea dust, artificial colour, or chemicals.
Risks include:
Harmful additives
Poor-quality caffeine
Chemical residues
Better choice:
Use good quality loose tea leaves or trusted tea bag brands.
Masala chai tastes great, but strong spices first thing in the morning can upset the stomach.
Possible issues:
Heartburn
Gas and bloating
Stomach irritation
Better choice:
Use light spices or enjoy masala tea later in the day.
Tea increases urination because it is a natural diuretic, which can lead to dehydration.
Signs of dehydration:
Headaches
Tiredness
Dry skin
Trouble concentrating
Better choice:
Drink water before or after your tea.
Here are some simple habits that make tea healthier:
Start the day with warm water
Eat a small snack before tea
Use less sugar
Do not boil tea for too long
Let tea cool a bit
Choose high-quality tea leaves
Limit yourself to 1–2 cups per day
With these small changes, you can enjoy your tea without affecting your health.
Morning tea is a comforting part of many people’s lives, but certain habits—such as drinking tea on an empty stomach, using too much sugar or milk, or over-boiling the leaves—can harm your digestive system and overall health. By adjusting a few simple habits, you can continue enjoying your favourite drink while taking better care of your body.
