Mary Kom denies quitting IOA panel, says she has not resigned

Boxing legend M.C. Mary Kom, who is also the chairperson of the Indian Olympic Association's (IOA) Athletes Commission, denied rumors that she had resigned from her position. She clarified on Tuesday that the reports about her resignation were a misunderstanding and that she would finish her term, which runs until 2026.

Mary Kom, a 42-year-old athlete from Manipur and a bronze medalist in the 2012 Olympics, had recently traveled to Haldwani to attend the National Games closing ceremony. While there, she expressed her dissatisfaction with the hotel where she was staying, calling it "inferior."

In an interview with PTI, Mary Kom explained that her frustration, which she had shared in a private WhatsApp group, was misunderstood. The message, she said, was leaked to the media, causing people to wrongly believe that she was resigning. "I have not resigned. I will complete my tenure, which ends in 2026," she said firmly.

Mary Kom added that she had only told her fellow members of the Athletes Commission that if such poor treatment happened again, she might think about resigning. However, she never actually stated that she was stepping down. "IOA is like family to me. If something makes me unhappy, I have the right to speak up," she said. "But just because I raised my concern does not mean I am resigning."

Her statement made it clear that she was committed to completing her duties with the IOA Athletes Commission despite the misunderstanding.
