Over the past five years, a significant number of Malaysians have chosen to renounce their citizenship, primarily opting to relocate to Singapore. According to official statistics, 61,116 Malaysians relinquished their citizenship, with nearly 57,314—approximately 94 percent—becoming citizens of Singapore. Australia and Brunei had far fewer applicants in comparison.
Annually, around 10,000 Malaysians have given up their citizenship during this timeframe. Notably, more women than men have taken this step, with 35,356 women renouncing their status in the five-year span.
This trend is most pronounced among younger demographics. Those aged between 31 and 40 constituted the largest group at 31.6 percent, closely followed by individuals aged 21 to 30 at 30.8 percent.
Economic factors heavily influence these choices. A considerable number of Malaysians are already employed in Singapore, where there are better job opportunities and salaries, facilitating their citizenship applications. Family ties also play a crucial role, especially for those marrying foreigners and relocating with their spouses.
There are instances where Malaysian citizenship may be revoked, such as when individuals acquire foreign citizenship and engage in activities tied to that nationality, as Malaysia prohibits dual citizenship.
This trend accentuates Malaysia's ongoing brain drain issue. Over the past half-century, close to 1.86 million Malaysians have exited the country—accounting for about 5.6 percent of the population—surpassing the global average.
To mitigate this, the government has rolled out initiatives aimed at retaining talent and encouraging expatriate Malaysians to return. Programs such as Malaysia at Heart help maintain connections for citizens abroad, while tax incentives and special initiatives draw skilled Malaysians back to the local workforce.
These strategies show promise, as many professionals are returning to Malaysia, indicating a possible transition from permanent emigration to a more dynamic talent exchange.
